As we mentioned, the cost of living in Mexico is significantly less than the U.S., Canada and much of Europe, in part due to the exchange rate when trading in dollars, British pounds or euros for pesos. How much you spend each month is obviously going to depend on your tastes and spending habits, but as a general rule most couples can get by quite comfortably spending between $2,165 and $2,180 USD per month living in Playa del Carmen, according to recent research by International Living.
As in most places, you can expect to spend the most on housing, and condos in Playa del Carmen are the most popular type of residential property. You can find a 1,200-square-foot condo for between $125,000 to $175,000 USD, but smaller studio units can also be found for much less, and luxury penthouses can range into the millions, depending on location. One of our insider tips is to look for a condo just a few blocks from the beach, where you can enjoy savings of between 30-50 percent and still be within easy walking distance of the warm turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean Sea for.
Two months of electricity service is generally around $60 or less, and you can get high-speed fiber optic Internet bundled with the local telephone service for a low fixed rate of around $20. A fabulous local beer costs around $2 and it’s easy to find delicious inexpensive meals for about $4, while a nice dinner for two in a mid-range restaurant will set you back around $25. We love to buy tacos from street vendors in downtown Playa del Carmen, where $2 will often get more freshly made food than most of us can eat in one sitting!
