If you’re wondering where to travel this spring (or summer, or fall, for that matter…) look no farther than Mexico, which has snagged five out of the top 15 vacation destinations for Americans this year, according to Condé Nast Traveler - more than any other country! From Cancun to downtown Playa del Carmen and Tulum in the Mexican Caribbean, to the thriving inland metropolis of Mexico City and the rocky shores of Cabo San Lucas on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, this list has something for everyone and offers plenty of exciting vacation ideas that you simply can’t find anywhere else in the world.
More than just a fantastic place to party, Cancun is the largest city on the Mexican Caribbean coast and serves as the gateway to the Riviera Maya region, offering a wealth of incredible activities for travelers of all ages. With sublime weather all year and affordable airfares, Cancun has been a favorite beach destination among American and Canadian travelers for decades, offering nearly 20 kilometers of powdery, white-sand beaches in the downtown Hotel Zone and a quieter 15 kilometer stretch of sand just north along the coast.
“You should know that there’s more to the city than sipping cocktails with coeds - we’re talking some of the best beaches and all-inclusive resorts on the Planet”, wrote Condé Nast about Cancun.
Playa del Carmen
Whether you’re looking for a chic, cosmopolitan beach town to enjoy Spring break with the whole family, or prefer an upscale adults-only escape, Playa del Carmen has you covered! With gorgeous white-sand beaches and a world-class culinary scene, Playa (as the locals often call it) is also a top shopping destination and offers easy access to the Cancun International Airport, which lies less than one hour north along the coast. Playa del Carmen is also among the world’s top snorkeling and diving destinations, with Cozumel island and the Great Mesoamerican barrier reef located just offshore.
“Playa del Carmen has carved its very own Euro-chic niche along the Yucatan Peninsula”, wrote U.S. News & World Report. “Sophisticated expats and vacationing Europeans relax at beachside lounges, upholding this budding beach town’s reputation as the place to see and be seen”.
As one of the coolest destinations on Earth, Tulum is home to the best beaches in the world, as well as sprawling ancient Mayan ruins, magical freshwater cenotes and lush tropical jungle. Situated less than one hour south of Playa del Carmen and long regarded worldwide as a top vacation destination for eco-conscious travelers, Tulum today offers a unique blend of luxury and sustainability, not to mention easy access to a dizzying array of remarkable activities unique to Mexico’s Riviera Maya region.
“Add to all that a seriously cool food scene that included a wildly popular pop-up restaurant from Danish chef René Redzepi a few years back, and you have yourself an obvious pick for your next destination”, wrote Condé Nast Traveler about Tulum.
If epic street food, vibrant art galleries, sophisticated hotels and lush public parks sounds like your idea of a fantastic vacation, Mexico City is just what the doctor ordered! With more amazing things to do than you could experience in an entire lifetime of spring breaks, Mexico City is in the midst of a cultural renaissance and has a fabulous culinary scene that will delight even the most well-traveled foodies. The buzzing downtown area has a storied history that includes pre-Hispanic and colonial-era splendor, blended with a smart contemporary edge.
“This high-octane megalopolis contains plenty of escape valves in the way of old-school cantinas, intriguing museums, inspired dining and boating excursions along ancient canals”, wrote Lonely Planet. “With so much going on, you just might consider scrapping those beach plans”!
Cabo San Lucas
Last but definitely not least, the bustling beach town of Cabo San Lucas is situated on the Baja California Peninsula and serves as the consummate playground of Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Although you’re likely to spot some serious spring break partiers, Cabo has so more to offer than just a spot for undergrads to blow off steam. Offering a sublime combination of luxury and natural beauty, this top Mexican beach town was once a favorite destination of Jacques Cousteau, with white sandy shores, arching stone cliffs and warm waters teeming with an abundance of sea life.
“The activities are endless: jet-skiing, banana boating, parasailing, snorkeling, kitesurfing, diving and horseback riding can all be found just by walking down to the beach”, wrote Lonely Planet about Cabo San Lucas. “Outside city limits, you’ll be surrounded by majestic cardón cacti, caracara birds and mystical arroyos (streams)”.
