A new report by International Living has named five Mexico beaches among the world’s best, including Cancun, Cozumel, and Tulum on the Yucatan Peninsula’s Caribbean coast, along with Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita on the country’s Pacific coast. Here’s a brief rundown of what makes each one of these Mexico beaches stand out from the crowd, along with some insider tips designed to make your next beach vacation one you will never forget!
Situated just north of the Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula’s Mexican Caribbean coast, Cancun is undeniably one of the world’s top beach towns. In fact, Cancun hosts upwards of 5 million visitors every year, making it the most popular vacation destination in the entire Caribbean! Known for its exciting nightlife, Cancun is home to dozens of sprawling resorts and miles of sugar-white sandy beaches, lined with gently swaying palm trees and the clear turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean Sea.
“Combined with the growing communities of Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum to the south, the Riviera Maya may well be a top competitor for the best vacation destination on the planet”, wrote International Living.
Situated south of Cancun and just 12 miles offshore from downtown Playa del Carmen, the island of Cozumel also has pristine beaches and is home to some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving experiences. Just 45 minutes south of the Cancun International Airport, Playa offers scenic ferry access to Cozumel island, making this an excellent choice for a day trip or overnight excursion. Cozumel provides a virtually unlimited array of watersports and recreational activities, such as boating, fishing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking and more. The island has modern infrastructure and is also home to one of the world’s top cruise ship ports.
Located about one hour south of Playa del Carmen, the eco-chic beach town of Tulum offers a chance to get back to basics without giving up every luxury in the process. Once a small backpacker’s outpost, today Tulum is a top choice among beach lovers worldwide, offering pristine beaches and impressive ancient Mayan ruins, including a stunning pyramid overlooking the Caribbean. Tulum has a charming bohemian vibe, with a variety of yoga studios, therapeutic massage, and Mayan spa lodge treatments, along with some of the world’s best restaurants, incredible local experiences and - of course - the best beaches in the world!
Moving over to Mexico’s Pacific coast, the town of Puerto Vallarta first gained international notoriety during the 1960s when actors Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr came here to film the classic movie Night of the Iguana. Since then, Puerto Vallarta has grown dramatically into a world-class beach vacation destination, attracting visitors from around the world and a growing number of expats from the United States and Canada, who come to enjoy the beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and old-world feel.
Also situated on the country’s Pacific coast, Sayulita is located just north of Puerto Vallarta in Nayarit and is home to some of the best Mexico beaches for surfing that you will find anywhere! In fact, Sayulita is known internationally as a surf town and is also a fantastic place to go paddle boarding, as well as deep sea fishing. It offers easy access to all the services and amenities of the big city in larger towns nearby, along with the funky bohemian vibe of a laid-back beach town, with markets, stores, restaurants and medical clinics available to cover day-to-day needs.
