Situated off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, about 25 minutes by ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is consistently recognized by top travel resources as one of the world’s best beach vacation destinations. Now Travel + Leisure magazine has joined the chorus of praise, naming Isla Mujeres one of the top five island destinations in its annual World’s Best Awards 2019 reader survey.
“Isla Mujeres is a relaxing spot that’s perfect for vacationing”, wrote T+L. “It’s a peaceful place surrounded by coral reefs”.
This year, Isla Mujeres came in third place in the rankings for the region, behind Ecuador’s Galapagos Island and Chile’s Easter Island. Determined by a pool of Travel + Leisure magazine readers, the annual World’s Best Awards ask readers to weigh in on a wide variety of different travel experiences around the world. For this ranking, readers rated islands according to activities, sightseeing, natural attractions and beaches, as well as food, friendliness and overall value.
Isla Mujeres Mexico also made third place in last year’s T+L World’s Best Awards, with readers commenting on the island’s world-class accommodations, pristine beaches and incomparable natural beauty. There are a variety of vacation rentals to choose from on Isla Mujeres, including condos and vacation homes, boutique hotels and larger resorts. It remains a favorite beach vacation destination among those who are looking for a more laid-back experience with easy access to all the excitement of the Cancun Hotel Zone on the mainland.
“If staying in Cancun isn’t for you and you’re looking for something slightly quieter, consider a stay in Isla Mujeres”, wrote TravelPulse.
The preferred method of transportation once you reach to the island is by scooter or golf cart rental, which makes it easy to access all of the sights on the Island. There are a lot of things to do in Isla Mujeres, for example while you’re here, be sure to check out Playa Norte, which lies to the north of the island near the ferry port and offers beach chair and umbrella rentals, making it the perfect place to while away a day (or two!) in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean.
When you’re ready for a little more adventure, head south and don’t worry about getting lost! Isla Mujeres is only about seven kilometers long and 650 meters across at its widest point, with about 30 kilometers of coastline, if you include seven smaller islands that lie just offshore. It’s here on the southern parts of the island that you’ll encounter a wild, rugged shoreline and sweeping cliffs.
Here, you can also visit Punta Sur, which is the easternmost point of Mexico and the first part of the country to be touched by the rising sun each morning. The Garrafon Natural Reef Park is also located nearby, with a memorable sculpture garden and the ruins of an ancient Mayan temple to explore. On the western coast of Isla Mujeres, be sure to check out Tortugranja, the island’s sea turtle sanctuary and rehab, which serves a vital purpose throughout the Mexican Caribbean region.
