How the Beach Benefits Your Brain: What Neuroscience Proves

I don’t know if we really needed science to prove why the beach is good for you, but here we have it; recent studies prove that a beautiful beach environment can have a profound positive impact on our brains and can even help to improve mental health. Research also finds that spending time near the ocean is good for your overall wellbeing, and studies show better mental and physical health among those who live close to the coast, as well as a greater sense of calm and general happiness.

“When you first step out on the sand and allow your lungs to be filled with salty, misty air, the negative ions can actually help calm your brain”, Clinical Psychologist Richard Shuster PsyD, told Inc.com. “Staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves’ frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state”.

A variety of different studies from both the U.S. and Britain have found that beach-dwelling promotes greater happiness, general wellbeing and even brain function. Sea water reportedly contains a variety of minerals, including magnesium, potassium and iodine that help the body fight infection, and breathing sea air has respiratory benefits that can promote a better night’s sleep.

Additional studies have discovered that the negatively ionized ocean air can help alleviate symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and that “grounding,” aka walking barefoot, is highly stimulating and provides a number of proven benefits for our bodies and minds. In addition, a 2012 University of Exeter Medical School study found that the act of simply living with close proximity to the beachfront can greatly improve one’s health and wellbeing.

“There are all these cognitive and emotional benefits that we derive when we spend time by the water”, stated Marine Biologist and Author Wallace J. Nichols. “It’s chemistry, it’s biology, it’s physiology. It’s deeply personal, but it’s also strong science”.
