Whether you’re a local, a first-time or repeat visitor, here are a few of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen to satisfy virtually any hunger cravings and quench your thirst! With a thriving foodie scene and a vibrant downtown that is home to one of the world’s longest pedestrian-only streets along much of Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida in Spanish), Playa - as the locals call it - offers endless opportunities for culinary exploration and adventure.
Where to Eat in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
“Full of lively bars, restaurants, beach clubs, shops and hotels, Playa’s eminently walkable downtown is one of the few places on the Riviera Maya where you can have a car-free vacation”, wrote Fodor’s.
1. El Fogón
Known for serving up some of the best tacos in Playa del Carmen, El Fogón has three locations downtown and though the menu is only in Spanish, don’t worry - you seriously can’t go wrong with whatever you choose! We love their Al Pastor taco, which features the tender, succulent meat you’ll probably notice upon arrival. And since one taco is only 15 pesos (about $0.80 USD), it’s totally affordable to taste test and find your favorites! Hint: The chorizo queso is also amazing!
If an amazing atmosphere (and to-die-for Mayan cuisine) is what you’re looking for, make a reservation at Alux! This incredibly unique restaurant in Playa del Carmen is built inside of a 10,000-year-old cave that is large enough to seat up to 250 people, with several private vaults that are available for private dinner parties. We recommend trying the Mexico Lindo Chili and the veggie tamale, but again, you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu that suits your taste. Hint: If you can’t make it here for dinner, it’s worth at least stopping by for a drink at the bar to check out the space!
3. Oh Lala!
As the best restaurant in downtown Playa del Carmen according to TripAdvisor, Oh Lala! definitely deserves a spot on this list. The food is delicious and it’s a fantastic place for a special occasion dinner, with presentation that’s so amazing, you might not want to actually eat your food! The restaurant itself is small and very intimate, so reservations are required and can be made online. We recommend the tuna steak with balsamic glaze and the house-made passionfruit cocktail - Oh Lala! indeed!
4. La Cueva de Chango
No visit to Playa is complete without enjoying a real Mexican breakfast and La Cueva de Chango is the place to go! Serving up mouthwatering huevos rancheros, this local favorite also has some of the best chilaquiles in downtown Playa del Carmen, featuring a variety of different chili versions to choose from.
5. Chez Celine
All of the fantastic food and activities in Playa are bound to leave you craving something sweet, or maybe just a snack, so head over to Chez Celine! You can’t miss this popular 5th Avenue restaurant, which features a busy patio and is popular for croissants, crepes and desserts. Hint: The early morning breakfast is also incredibly delicious and after 1 p.m. there is a salad and sandwich menu available.
