More people are traveling today than ever before, so Airbnb has named the top 10 cities in the world for solitary vacations in a recent travel guide and three destinations in Mexico made the cut, including Cancun at #1, followed by Playa del Carmen and Mexico City. This comes as more great news for anyone who owns turnkey vacation rentals (or any other type of real estate, for that matter) in Playa del Carmen or Cancun, and it also speaks to the immense safety of Mexico’s top destinations, which includes the entire Riviera Maya region.
“A growing number of home bookings are for individual travelers,” wrote Airbnb. “In top cities for solo travel, anywhere from 14% to 27% of all bookings are made by solo travelers.”
Furthermore, in 2016, TripAdvisor revealed that 17% of travelers had made plans to try vacationing alone for the first time, while Lonely Planet says a new survey by BookYogaRetreats.com found 51% of respondents would take their next holiday trip alone.
According to Airbnb, Cancun has seen an increase of 170% in solo bookings over the last year, placing this city in the Mexican Caribbean at number one on this list!
“Cancun is not just for spring break anymore,” wrote Airbnb.
With the Cancun International Airport making travel to and from Mexico’s Riviera Maya a breeze, it’s no wonder people are coming here alone in droves to escape the pressures of daily life, whether for spring break, the best winter vacations or amazing summertime getaways, taking in the gorgeous beaches, colorful markets, museums and national parks.
Playa del Carmen
Downtown Playa del Carmen is situated less than one hour from the Cancun International Airport and according to Airbnb it came in fourth on the list, with a rise of 141% in bookings over the last year.
“Playa del Carmen is the perfect spot for those looking for a bit of R&R with its collection of beautiful beaches,” wrote Airbnb.
Considering the wide variety of luxurious yet affordable condos and vacation homes available in the area, it’s really not surprising that Playa del Carmen real estate is attracting more visitors than ever. And with more than $200 million USD already committed to new real estate investment projects this year, the growth of this cosmopolitan city is showing no signs of slowing down.
Coming in at number eight on the list, Mexico City rounds out the top destinations for solo travelers in Mexico proving that there is more to travel here than meets the eye.
“This capital city boasts some of the best food finds among an incredible mix of architectural styles,” wrote Airbnb. “Mexico City also houses an impressive number of murals from famed artist Diego Rivera.”
