If you’ve ever seen the beautiful, white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters of Mexico’s Riviera Maya firsthand, it’s easy to understand why the Playa del Carmen real estate market is booming – and showing no signs of slowing down as tourism numbers continue to soar. Here are five beaches on the Caribbean Sea (in no particular order) that have helped put Playa on the international map as a top destination for vacation home rentals, retirees and expats of all ages.
As home of the famed Mamitas Beach Club, this beach is situated in the heart of downtown Playa del Carmen, just a few blocks from the always on-trend Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida). Often voted the best beach in Playa, Mamitas Beach is where the jet setters – who are also snapping up the best property deals as fast as they come to market – like to see and be seen. Available services and amenities include beach chairs, umbrellas and beds; a VIP pool area; a “chill lounge” with electronic music; waiter service that includes food and drinks; and a club house with restaurant, bathrooms and outdoor showers, to name only the basics.
Okay, technically this beach isn’t actually in Playa del Carmen– Xpu-Ha is about 20 minutes south of the exclusive resort community of Puerto Aventuras – but trust us – it’s well worth the trip! Here, the expansive white sand beaches and translucent turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea will mesmerize even the most jaded travelers, and you can wade out for hundreds of feet with the clear water only waist deep. Be sure to check out one of the local eateries while in nearby Puerto Aventuras – we like El Cielo or La Playa – which you’ll find scattered here and there on the beach.
Situated just five minutes south of downtown Playa, Blue Venado beach is a tranquil slice of the fabled Caribbean Dream on the shores of Punta Venado park. Here, visitors can enjoy horseback riding, ATVs and zipline tours, or opt to explore cenotes and the lush jungle before hitting the Blue Venado Beach Club. Here, the ivory beaches offer mini palapas for shade, lounge chairs and white-curtained beach beds, as well as an eco-conscious restaurant serving Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.
Located at the end of the cobblestoned Calle 38 at the beach in downtown Playa, getting to the shoreline at Shangri-La Beach at the Mahekal Beach Resort will take you past some of this Caribbean beach town’s best restaurants. The alabaster sand here is pristine and lined with palm trees, making it a popular gathering spot for locals, expats and visitors alike. Shangri-La is also a great place to enjoy a game of beach volleyball or a laid-back family day at the beach.
Venture just 20 minutes north of downtown and you’ll find another great real estate investment area in Playa around Maroma Beach, which is a vast stretch of soft white sand that offers a number of fun beach activities. Visitors can also pay for access to beach loungers with umbrellas, a volleyball court and soccer balls, while the always-courteous wait staff serves casual beachside fare, like ceviche, ice cold buckets of beer and lime margaritas.
