Visitors might find themselves feeling a bit overwhelmed by the wide variety of tequila in Mexico that is offered for sale in local stores, restaurants and bars. As the world’s fastest-growing category in the global spirits market, tequila is here to stay and establishments like the new Tequila Academy of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, are popping up to help educate consumers about the many different types of this amazing liquor.
“According to The Spirits Business magazine, the total sales was [more than $7.7 billion USD] in 2009, which increased to [more than $10.7 billion USD] in 2015,” wrote Breaking Travel News. “By 2019 it is expected to hit [more than $14.6 billion USD].”
To look at this booming industry from another perspective, research by Tequila Matchmaker also revealed that an average of nine new tequila brands are launched every month! And today, the tequila trend is all about sipping high-end 100 percent agave premium brands and tasting couture cocktails – not so much about cheap shots and sugary margaritas.
Which is where the new Tequila Academy of Playa del Carmen comes in. Now, visitors, expats and locals can experience a private professional tequila tasting while learning all about Mexico’s “sacred spirit.” Situated in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya just south of Cancun overlooking the white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Playa del Carmen is a bustling, international city imbued with a strong cultural vibe.
“The tequila tastings are hosted by a WSET qualified tutor in a similar style to wine tastings or whisky tastings,” wrote Breaking Travel News.
The new Tequila Academy of Playa del Carmen also offers professional private tastings in the comfort of your home or condo. During the one and a half hour events, participants get to taste different varieties of tequila, learn about the history, production, types and classes of this much-loved spirit and learn to shop for tequila with confidence. In addition to sampling the tequila, each participant is awarded a certificate of achievement after the tasting.
In other tequila-related news, Diageo brands announced it would invest upwards of $400 million USD in its Mexico operations and Don Julio tequila this year. According to Just-Drinks.com, the five-year investment will include expanding production facilities for the brand, such as distilling, bottling and water treatment, as well as increasing its agave farming capacity. In addition, Diageo plans to build a new heritage center in Jalisco state, creating at least 200 direct jobs.
“Mexico is a country of enormous opportunity and will form an important part of Diageo’s future,” stated CEO Ivan Menezes. “This investment reaffirms our long-term commitment to Mexico and we look forward to playing a bigger role in the industry, investing in our people and communities and supporting a wider economic development.”
So, the next question is: When are you coming to Playa del Carmen for a tour (and tequila tasting)?
