Casa Malca was formerly a private estate that has been transformed into a breathtaking beachside houtique hotel in Tulum, which lies just south of Playa del Carmen and Cancun in Mexico’s famed Riviera Maya region. Consisting of breathtaking seaside Mayan ruins (including a pyramid!),a tiny hotel-lined street, lush jungle and some of the world’s most stunning white sand beaches overlooking the Caribbean coast,Tulum really is a world away from the everyday hustle and bustle of daily life in most modern cities.

Situated along Carretera Tulum Boca Paila (aka Route 15) Casa Malca is a unique destination certified by the esteemed Design Hotels, offering 180 meters of pristine white-sand beachfront property and just 35 guest rooms, which equals zero chance for crowding. In addition, the beachfront property is Tulum’s only art-centric hotel, featuring extraordinary works of art on display throughout the development.
According to Coolhunting.com,the property’s hotelier Lio Malca is perhaps best known for his self-named NYC gallery and his expertise on artworks by Haring and Basquiat. He fell in love with the area “almost by accident” during a visit in 2012 during the last year of the Mayan calendar and wound up extending his trip for weeks so he could begin looking for property in Tulum.
“I was exploring the different cities of the area,” Malca told CH. “I stepped out of my cabin and touched the sand and I was like: ‘Where am I” Where have I been?’”
Malca visited a wide variety of available real estate, but kept coming back to the private estate that has become Casa Malca; a property that once belonged to infamous crime lord Pablo Escobar. Seized by the Mexican government years ago – more than a decade after Escobar’s death – the property was not necessarily easy to obtain. Eventually,Malca learned the land had been turned back over to the person who had owned it before Escobar and discovered he could finally buy the property, which he originally planned to use as a vacation home.
“I purchased the property because I thought it was insane,” Malca revealed. “I could not believe that this world,a property like this still exists and hasn’t been taken over by a corporation."
Today, the boutique hotel’s modern, spacious rooms all house works of art from Malca’s personal collection and many of the units are just a few paces from the clear blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Hammocks can be seen dotting the landscape of the vast beachfront property, which also boasts a restaurant and Haring-themed bar,as well as special events from time to time. There is air conditioning and WiFi everywhere, but Casa Malca also manages to deliver an organic sensory experience that is in tune with the eco-chic vibe of Tulum.
