PGA Tour Snubs Trump’s Golf Course,Heads to Mexico Instead

06 June, 2016

While Trump Golf is the self-proclaimed “most globally recognized brand in luxury golf,” the reality is that brand took a big hit late last week when the World Golf Championships – which happens to be one of the most prestigious events on the annual PGA Tour – snubbed the Trump National Doral Golf Course in favor of holding the event in Mexico City, reported Euan McKirdy for CNN.

“The PGA Tour is moving a key tour date away from a course owned by the reality TV show star, golf resort developer and real estate billionaire… And relocating it to Mexico.”

Ongoing Bigotry

The move comes in response to Trump’s ongoing attacks aimed at Mexico, which has been a focal point for the presumptive Republican presidential candidate’s negative campaign tactics since he first announced his bid for commander in chief. Trump has repeatedly made statements that are not based in reality, claiming that Mexicans are “illegal immigrants,” as well as “rapists” who are “bringing drugs” into the United States – claims that have a tough time holding up when exposed to the light of truth and facts.

“He has subsequently promised numerous times to build a border wall, which he insists he will be able to get Mexico to pay for,” wrote CNN. “His latest run-in with Mexicans came as he pointedly noted the ethnicity of the judge presiding over a lawsuit related to Trump University.”

During a recent campaign stop,Trump demanded the judge,Gonzalo Curiel, remove himself from the case based on his ethnicity. Curiel was born in Indiana, but is of Mexican decent.

Losing Support

Fortunately,it’s obvious that the pro-golfing world at least is not amused by Trump’s ongoing racially-charged rhetoric. The World Golf Championship is a top-tier event that is second only in global prominence behind to the sport’s four annual majors. It has been held at Trump’s Miami-based Doral course since the 1960’s,but PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem says the event will be moved to Mexico City in 2017,when it will also be renamed the WSG-Mexico Championship.

The Future Is Mexico

“The decision here was based on the reality that we are not able to secure sponsorship for next year’s WSG at Doral,or for years out for that matter,” Finchem said during a press conference. “At the same time,we had an opportunity to build what we think is going to be a spectacular event in an area that is strategically important to the growth of the sport and the activity of the PGA Tour that has been focused in South America and Central America for the last good number of years.”

Trump reportedly took over the property in 2012 and the commissioner noted that the candidate’s “politics may have contributed” to negative branding associated with the Trump name, making it difficult to find new sponsorship.

“It’s quite ironic that we’re going to Mexico after being at Doral,” stated Rory McIlroy,four-time major winner. “We just jump over the wall.”
