A Journey Into Paradise

5 Minutes On 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

01 February, 2016

As the region’s premier shopping district, Playa del Carmen’s pedestrian-only 5th Avenue (or La Quinta Avenida in Spanish) runs parallel to the Caribbean Sea and is lined with an eclectic assortment of restaurants, hotels, condos, shops and lounges.

Also known simply as La Quinta by locals and repeat visitors alike, 5th Avenue in Playa has developed a worldwide reputation as an ultra-chic shopping destination and is attracting new investors, so select sections are a work in progress. Most recently, this is thanks in large part to a large influx of investment dollars by Thor Equities totaling more than $210 million USD for one project alone.

“It seems as if everyone in town is out strolling along La Quinta until midnight,”  writes Frommer’s.

Our latest video takes viewers on a quick journey down 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen, highlighting the best places to stop for a variety of needs, from cappuccino to cosmetics to designer duds. Designed to give viewers a feel for what life is really like in Playa del Carmen, this short film imparts a bit of the unique and always energetic vibe of Quinta Avenida.

“Nobody could have foreseen the astronomic rise of Playa del Carmen from a small fishing village to its current status as one of the most famous resort towns in Mexico,” stated an editorial on Cancun.com. “Peace, quiet and a bohemian atmosphere combine to make it an ideal place for people looking for fun and relaxation by the beach.”

Despite its surging popularity, the video shows that Playa has managed to retain a certain village feel, which makes navigation around town a breeze. Still, 5th Avenue offers something for everyone and a wide variety of services are found here as well. Highlights include Swarovski, Liverpool Duty Free, Bvulgari, Señor Frogs, Starbucks, Nike, M.A.C, Victoria’s Secret, Sunglass Hut, Nine West, Starbucks, Stradivarius, SUR Steakhouse and Diamonds International, along with a delightful array of street vendors, artists, locally-owned shops and inventive restaurants.

The Cozumel ferry is also located right off of Quinta Avenida, and last fall saw the grand opening of Thor Urbana’s new 92-room Thompson Playa del Carmen hotel. Centrally located on La Quinta Avenida, the development also includes a separate, 27-room oceanfront Beach House, which is a short five-minute walk from the main property.

“As the only hotel in Playa offering a central downtown location and a beachfront retreat, guests have the option to relax by the rooftop infinity pool, dive into seaside activities, dine and dance at Catch, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, browse in contemporary retail shops or tour the nearby Riviera Maya,” shared the property’s general manager Julian Smaldoni in a recent interview with Travel Weekly.
