Global Retirement Names Mexico Among World’s Best Places To Retire

26 January, 2016

In today’s increasingly connected world, retiring abroad is easier than ever before and some of the world’s most popular retirement destinations offer much more for the same amount of money than comparable cities in the U.S.,Canada and Europe, reported the Huffington Post.

This year,Mexico is among the top four countries listed on the International Living Annual Global Retirement Index, which names the countries where retirees can live better for less around the world. It also measures the level of significant retiree benefits and discounts, including continued savings on things like transportation, entertainment, social services, visa costs and healthcare.

“Mexico offers easy residence for North Americans – if it didn’t,how could the nearly one million U.S. citizens who live there do it?” wrote Huffington Post. “With a visitor permit, you can spend nearly six months in the country: Plenty of time to suss out great retirement spots like Tulum and San Miguel de Allende.”

In addition,Mexico’s residence visas are extremely popular because they are so straightforward, and staying longer is not a problem, despite the fact that Mexico does not offer a special retiree visa. Still, the number of standard retiree benefits offered in Mexico are part of what helped place it third on the list, nipping at the heels of Panama and Ecuador.

To get the available benefits,it’s key for retirees in Mexico to obtain an INAPAM card, which is the nation’s versatile senior-citizen discount card.

“Expats ages 60 and older who have a residence visa for Mexico can apply for the card, just as Mexican seniors do,” wrote Global Travel Industry News.

With the INAPAM card, retirees can receive discounts that range between 5 and 50 percent off on a variety of goods, services and other items. This includes movie tickets,sporting-event tickets, museum and archaeological site entrance fees, airline and bus tickets. In addition, many of Mexico’s hotels, restaurants, shops and travel agencies offer discounts to INAPAM holders, along with many pharmacies (not to mention all medications cost much less than they do in the United States),doctors, dentists and medical specialists who offer substantial senior discounts.

“In an increasing number of areas,INAPAM holders [also] receive discounts on their property and their water bills,” revealed Global Travel Industry News.

Tip: Property and utility discounts reportedly vary from one district to the next,so be sure to check ahead of time when buying real estate in Mexico.
