The XPLOR Park in Playa del Carmen hosted the sold-out 5k XPLOR Bravest Race on Sunday,Sept. 13,presenting runners with a new set of unique challenges and obstacles designed to test their endurance, physical power and overall skill,as well as mental and spiritual strength. According to the event’s Facebook page,it is “the first underground race with obstacles and persecutors where you will compete face to face against your fears."
At the XPLOR Bravest Race, participants had to run, crawl, jump, dive and swim through a variety of obstacles set up at the XPLOR Park to “Be The Bravest,” delivering at least one of three possible flags upon reaching the target (finish line). More than 2,000 runners showed up Sunday to overcome their biggest fears at the race, after months of training,to show that there is no obstacle that can’t be beat by determination.
During the race, five people were secretly selected and will later be announced for participation in the casting process for the fourth season of the popular reality show “La Isla 2016,” which airs on TV Azteca and will take place in the Mexican Caribbean. The show puts the mental and physical strength of 18 people to the test as they wage a battle to win the final prize.
Each participant was equipped with their very own safety helmet, which also permitted for easy location along the route, ensuring that plenty of photos are available for each runner. A drone was also on hand to capture additional overhead action shots. Family and friends were permitted free entry to the race,in order to watch and lend moral support.
After the race, runners and spectators were invited to enjoy the Bravest Party, which started the moment participants crossed the finish line. Offering live music and DJ entertainment,as well as Mexican,Italian and Argentinian food,XPLOR The Bravest games for the entire family and giveaways all day long, the party is the ideal place for runners to unwind after the race.
This is the third Xplor Bravest Race held to date – there were also two races in 2014. This year, there were more than twice the number of participants compared to last year, and the event was completely sold out, with many would-be runners already taking to social media to ask when the next race will be held.
XPLOR Park is located just five minutes from downtown Playa del Carmen and 45 minutes south of Cancun in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya. The park receives nearly half a million explorers each year and comprises nearly 60 hectares, eight of which are entirely underground. The property is alsosituated right next to Xcaret Park.
Each year, the nearby island of Cozumel, which lies just offshore in the Caribbean Sea and a short ferry ride away from Playa, hosts the Ironman Cozumel competition, which is another major race and much-anticipated sporting event for the area, which is an ideal location for a wide variety of outdoor events.
