The 4th Annual Akumal Comedy Festival will kick off at 8 p.m. Tuesday,April 14th at the Mateos Mexican Grill in nearby Tulum,launching more than 12 different comedy showcases to be held in world-class venues throughout the region,culminating in a finale event starting at 8 p.m. Saturday,April 18 on Akumal’s Grateful Dead Stage,followed by a 10 p.m. “Best of the Fest” performance at La Buena Vida Bar.
Other events during the festival include a show at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,April 15 at the Wah Wah Beach Bar in Playa del Carmen,along with additional performances at 8 and 10 p.m. both Thursday and Friday,April 16 and 17 in Akumal on the Grateful Dead Stage and at La Buena Vida.
Akumal is a small,beachfront tourist,local and expat community located about 60 miles south of the Cancun International Airport,about halfway between the popular destinations of Playa del Carmen and Tulum along the Mexican Caribbean Sea in the heart of the Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula.
According to the website,the 2015 festival will feature more than 20 different U.S. comedians performing eight different shows over the five-day event. The comedy festival is now in its fourth year and was originally conceptualized by Grammy Award-winning producer and founder of Stand Up! Records Dan Schlissel,along with the late comedian and actor Gus Lynch. The duo set out to create a nonprofit fundraiser and showcase of the finest professional established and rising stars in stand up comedy,located in one of the world’s most fantastic destinations to raise money and generate awareness for local causes,with 100 percent of the proceeds going to support regional projects via the Mexican Red Cross.
The 2015 lineup includes a variety of recognizable names in stand up,including Jeff Pfoser,Chad Daniels,Tommy Ryman,Derek Sheen,Lisa Alvarado,Darryl Lennox,JT Habersaat,Al Klemick,Luke Bugeaud,Craig Norton,Mike Stanley,Colleen Doyle Justice,Joe Staats,Chris Maddock,Maggie Faris,Adam Cayton-Holland,El Cojo Feliz,Daniel Sosa,Roberto Andrade,Erick Vargas,Alex Roga and Luiki Wiki.
