Each year, the warm waters near Cabo San Lucas in the Sea of Cortez on Mexico’s Pacific coast play host to some of the world’s best sport fishing. Thousands of anglers and sport fishing enthusiasts will head back to Cabo San Lucas,Mexico, this October to witness or take part in two of the world’s top sport fishing competitions.
“Sport fishing is an integral part of the history of Cabo; it is how the destination began,” stated Eduardo Segura, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board,in an interview with TravelPulse.
The 17th Annual Los Cabos Billfish Tournament will be held from Tuesday,Oct. 13 through Saturday,Oct. 17,followed by the highly anticipated Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament, from Tuesday,Oct. 20 through Saturday,Oct. 24.
The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament is a world-class event that is known for being environmentally conscious, enforcing the use of non-offset circle hooks when live-bait fishing. This ensures the fish have the maximum chance for survival when released. Last year, the six-angler team Reel Gold snagged the top spot, pulling in a massive 365-pound blue marlin and taking home more than $100,000 in cash. The Los Cabos Billfish Tournament began in 1999 and was also the first in Cabo to introduce a live online scorekeeper, which allowed fans from all over the world to keep track of what happens on the water.
The Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament is also known as “The Richest Fishing Tournament In The World” and is definitely the highest paying in Cabo San Lucas. In 2014,more than $2.2 million was paid out in cash and prizes to winning teams, with upwards of 900 anglers from countries around the world – Canada to Japan – participating in the event. Bisbee’s Black & Blue Tournaments have been taking place in Cabo for more than 30 years.
“It’s five days of organized chaos full of hard-core excitement,” writes Bisbee’s on the event website. “With the beautiful and lively city of Cabo San Lucas as the backdrop, thousands of people crowd the marina walkways to shop, party and watch huge fish being weighed in at the scales in front of the world-famous Puerto Paraiso Entertainment Plaza.”
The neighboring towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo – collectively known as Los Cabos – are located at the tip of the 1,000-mile Baja Peninsula, which is one of the world’s most culturally and naturally diverse tropical vacation destinations. With dramatic desert landscapes and rocky outcroppings overlooking the Pacific shore and Sea of Cortez,Cabo is home to a wide variety of award-winning resorts,world-class shopping and fabulous culinary offerings.
