When speaking with clients about areas that they have visited in the Riviera Maya, most of them will mention, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal or Tulum. When asked if they have ever been to Paamul, the normal responses are," what's a Paamul?", or "Never heard of it."
Allow me to introduce you to Paamul… a diamond in the rough and the hidden treasure of the Riviera Maya real estate. It is as special as the folks who live here. Those who prefer to spend their vacations, retirement, or their escape from the harsh, cold northern winters, in the most laid back of fashions. Eschewing the typical condo living for one of a more Bohemian lifestyle.
Affectionately referred to as a "Caribbean RV park", Paamul is located 10 minutes south of Playa, and five minutes north of Puerto Aventuras… but it is a world away from either. Situated on the breathtaking blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, you can walk around this quaint little community, and you'll see "palapa" homes of all different configurations. Each home is as different and special as the folks who own them.
Now, for the uninitiated, a "palapa" is a thatched-roof, open-sided structure. The material to cover the roof of a "palapa" typically consists of dried and woven palm-tree leaves. For the record though, it is not the roofs that make the homes of Paamul so unique, but rather what sits beneath.
You'll find very basic structures consisting of a mobile home on one half of the lot, and an open air kitchen, dining and living room on the other half; while others will be concrete structures with extras such as imported Italian marble floors, custom designed lighting and weeping walls.
But no matter what you have done with your home, Paamul is above all else a community of friendly people. The vast majority of whom are expats from the U.S. and Canada. And all are there for one purpose only- they want to experience the "Caribbean Lifestyle".
Every home in Paamul is a short leisurely stroll from the Caribbean, where you can float, swim, snorkel the off-shore reef, or book a dive trip with Scuba-Mex. It is the oldest dive center south of Cancun, and they are on their 30th year of business without one diving accident in all that time!
There is also a bar/restaurant where many of the residents will gather in the evening for dinner, their favorite beverages, and entertainment. This can range from a local DJ spinning your sing-along favorites to the weekly hermit crab races.
In short, Paamul is truly a wonderful, eclectic community with a taste and feel all its own. And a place like no other in the Riviera Maya.
