1000 Rally in 2010,in collaboration with promoter and organization President Mike Pearlman. Originally established in November of 1967 by Pearlman’s late father Ed and other racers,by the mid-1970s the event had evolved into the internationally recognized Baja 1000. This year, the race is schedule to take place from Saturday,April 25 through Wednesday,April 29.
“Our mission continues to be to promote and help grow the great sport of off-road racing,” shared off-road champion Robby Gordon in an interview with Off-Road.com. “We will continue to give competitors opportunities to race and to expose this amazing sport to the masses, which we will do through our social media efforts and the NBC broadcast.”
Today, the one-of-a-kind,four-day annual rally includes vintage, historic and evolution classes of off-road vehicles and motorcycles, along with rally cars,a limited group of modern desert racecars and classes for pre-runner trucks and buggies. This year,Gordon will also introduce the new Pro Unlimited class to the NORRA Mexican 1000,which stretches from Ensenada south to Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
“Off-road racing remains the greatest form of motorsport that most [people] have never been exposed to,” Gordon shared. “Our efforts with the Pro Unlimited class in the Mexican 1000 follows what we started under Formula Off-Road with the Stadium Super Trucks series.”
According to the interview, the Pro Unlimited class will feature a variety of trucks and buggies that do not fit into the previously established NORRA classes. It will include current model trucks and buggies and tire sizes are not limited,as they are in other classes.
“A diverse field of over 200 trucks, sedans, buggies and motorcycles are expected to take on a 1,300-plus mile,four-day on and off-road rally in 2015,” writes NORRA on a press release. “As has been NORRA tradition, the routes will be kept secret until just prior to the rally’s start, with no pre-event course reconnaissance (pre-running) allowed.”
NORRA will offer three separate routes on each of the four rally days to better suit all types of off-road vehicles after using a similar split-route format with positive results in the 2014 rally, separating cars and motorcycles with enough time and distance between two and four-wheel entries to ensure participant safety.
“In our first five years, the NORRA staff has worked hard to make our Mexican 1000 experience as exceptional as possible,” stated Pearlman.
This year the Grand Mayan Resort in Cabo San Lucas will host an evening of beachfront entertainment Wednesday,April 29 for all race participants. The massive party will include a red carpet entrance,a variety of delicious food stations,a full bar with Azunia Tequila margaritas, live music and a special awards ceremony, topped off by an enormous fireworks show.
“First and foremost, the Mexican 1000 is about having fun and enjoying the competition,” shared Pearlman.
