As the number of international tourists choosing to vacation in Mexico each year continues to spike,hotels and resorts are quickly moving to accommodate the growing demand and increasing sophistication of travelers.
“Forbes and the New York Times predicted Mexico will be a top destination for travel in 2015,” shared Richard Houghton of Investment Properties Mexico. “So it’s really no surprise that dozens of new hotels are opening in Mexico between now and 2016,many of which will be in the Riviera Maya.”
Over the course of the last few months alone,a slew of beachfront properties in Mexico have announced major renovations or grand openings,including Karisma Hotels & Resorts,Hard Rock Hotels,One&Only Resorts,Hyatt Hotels & Resorts,the Mahekal Beach Resort,Apple Leisure Group and the Matlali Hotel.
Karisma Hotels & Resorts unveiled a $40 million expansion in January at its Azul Fives Hotel in Playa del Carmen and also completed the final upgrades to its Generations Riviera Maya property,which lies just south of Cancun and Puerto Morelos. The Azul Fives expansion included a new Essence Spa,three gourmet restaurants,two bars,a coffee shop and a gym. The Generations property has been dubbed a “Gourmet Inclusive” resort and has already received a AAA Four Diamond Award.
Hard Rock Hotels has been growing like crazy throughout Mexico in recent years,opening properties in the Riviera Maya,Cabo San Lucas,Cancun and Puerto Vallarta,with plans for a second Cancun property already in the works. In the meantime,the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya already unveiled a very special upgrade recently in a special ceremony to honor one of rock’s biggest living legends. The newly designed Bret Michaels Rock Star Suite stands as a testament to the iconic singer,who personally worked with the resort’s design team to select the 9,204 square-foot suite’s lavish appointments,including a large display case showcasing the star’s Taxicab motorcycle and Rose guitar. Other features include a DJ booth and bar,a raised dance floor,inspirational quotes and private screening room.
In addition,the ultra-luxurious One&Only Resorts has partnered with Kerzner International and BK Partners to develop two new properties in Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific Coast over the next few years. The One&Only Mandarina will be located in Riviera Nayarit,about 50 kilometers north of the Puerto Vallarta International Airport,encompassing 145 gorgeous villas and private residential estates,offering world-class farm-to-table dining and a variety of high-end shopping options. The new One&Only Santa Maria de Xala will open in a stunning 1,200-hectare development approximately 100 kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta’s airport,offering an authentic hacienda experience in 75 luxury villas and suites. The brand already operates a fantastic and critically acclaimed destination in Cabo San Lucas.
The Hyatt brand has also been expanding again after announcing its first two all-inclusive resorts in Mexico during 2013. Then,in early March of this year the Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta opened its doors for the first time,bringing 335 new rooms to the area. Situated just a few minutes from downtown,the beachfront hotel and resort has already been awarded AAA Four Diamond Status and is part of a $20 million property renovation. Hyatt also plans to open a new hotel and resort in Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Caribbean coast in June of 2015,set upon the soft white sand of Mamitas Beach and just minutes from the fantastic shops,restaurants and nightlife of Playa’s famed Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue).
Also of note,Apple Leisure Group’s subsidiary AMResorts will begin expanding in 2015,with plans to introduce its Breathless Resorts & Spas brand in Mexico’s Riviera Maya,with the Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa,which will open by March of 2016. This adults-only property will focus on providing exhilarating entertainment,fabulous restaurants and a vibrant social atmosphere.
If boutique properties are more to your liking,consider checking out the newly remodeled,Boho-chic 122-room Mahekal Beach Resort in Playa del Carmen (formerly known as Shangri-La Caribe),which just received a $10 million renovation,including an interior by famed designer Todd Ficus,who also works with Tom Ford and Salvatore Ferragamo. Or,over on Mexico’s Pacific Coast,the boutique Matlali Hotel property offers 40 villa style guest accommodations and is located in the hills overlooking Banderas Bay near Puerto Vallarta.
