A Journey Into Paradise

Feeling like home,just got closer

25 January, 2015

There are thousands of expats and counting that call the Riviera Maya home.  We absolutely love Mexico, the lifestyle, and the climate.  Of course,we have Starbucks,Costco,Sam's,Home Depot,Walmart,Sears and every other major brand.  However, sometimes it is hard to find the more trivial things when living in paradise.  I would say many people are like an extended family down here.  We hang out, celebrate holidays together, watch each other's kids grow, and bring back things for each other when we travel.  However, these "things"  are not what you think and the days of bringing stuff back are numbered.  Why? you may ask.

When my wife recently traveled to the states she had a list of "things" that she was getting for people.  My request, like many of our friends, was simple and straight forward.  All I asked for were Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Butterfinger candy bars.  I know, not the healthiest things in the world.  However,I always ask for them when anyone travels north.  Well, that ended tonight.

My wife and I went to the new Chedraui Supermarket (Mexican grocery chain) across the street from my Puerto Aventuras condo and I was amazed at the selection in this place.  I scribbled down all the "things" that people used to ask for but now do not have to.  The new Chedruai had, among other things….Reese's Peanut Butter Cup's,Butterfinger's,Neuman's Own and Brianna's Salad Dressing,3 kinds of Wasabi and an entire Asian section,Bush's Baked Beans,Pop Tarts, and KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce.  Now,many of you may be asking "who cares?"  Well, everyone who shoves baked beans and candy bars in their baggage will now be able to focus on other goods.

My hopes are high but I have a feeling my friends from Belgium will have to continue to bring down my favorite ale…..Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.  But,for now,I am happy with candy and pop tarts.
