Cancun’s professional soccer team,Atlante, kicked off their 95th anniversary season by taking their official team photo at the ruins of Tulum. Club president Jose Antonio Garcia stated,“For us this is a very important day, more than ever we are demonstrating that we are Quintanarooenses. This is an historic day for Atlante and we are very pleased to be here, this is the first of many activities we have to celebrate our 95 anniversary and what better place than the spectacular and enigmatic ruins of Tulum.”
Atlante Football Club is a professional soccer team currently playing in the first division of Mexican soccer. The club moved from Mexico City for the start of the 2007-2008 season, making Andres Quintana Roo Stadium its home. As the only representation in the top tier of Mexican soccer,Atlante FC quickly became the state of Quintana Roo’s darling son.
With a passionate following behind them, only five months passed before Atlante FC were crowned kings of Mexican soccer, winning the championship on December 9,2007. In doing so,the team qualified for the CONCACF Champions League where they went on to become champions after beating fellow countrymen Cruz Azul in the final. This achievement lead to the club being invited to represent the CONCACAF region in the 2009 World Club Cup,its finest hour since conception.
The team went on to lose in the semifinals 3-1 to eventual champions and world powerhouse Barcelona FC. But not before demonstrating to the world the passion and love Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo has for its soccer team.
Today you can enjoy the excitement of watching Atlante FC every other weekend amongst 30,000 face painted, cheer singing, tamale eating, and horn blowing enthusiasts in their downtown stadium in the heart of Cancun real estate.
