A Journey Into Paradise

Sun,Sand & Surf: Sightseeing Along Mexico’s Riviera Maya

31 March, 2014

When visitors first plan to come to the Riviera Maya, which is situated on the Caribbean Coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, many are surprised by the wide variety of short, direct flights that are available. From the east coast of the U.S.,for example, travelers can reach the Cancun International Airport in about four hours – which makes it possible to wake up in the middle of winter and be snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea by noon!

This easy accessibility makes Riviera Maya real estate an excellent choice for travelers who want to get away, but only have three or four days to do it. Although many travelers enjoy Cancun, which offers first-rate shopping and countless international dining options, there are also plenty of other destinations available within easy driving distance of Cancun in the Riviera Maya, thanks to the newly renovated highways along the coast.

For example, the city of Tulum lies along the coast just about 90 minutes south of the airport, and Playa del Carmen is at the halfway point just 45 minutes south of Cancun. Known as “Playa” to the locals, this boho chic beach town is home to a wide variety of trendy shops and fabulous restaurants, many of which can be found along Fifth Avenue. Here, visitors are encouraged to take a break at an outdoor table – drink in hand,of course – and enjoy the action. There is no better way to shift into vacation mode!

Upon reaching Tulum, the hustle and bustle of Cancun – and even the lively vibe of Playa del Carmen – will seem worlds away. Although Tulum is home to a variety of excellent spas and restaurants, the beaches are undoubtedly the town’s main attraction. With the softest white sand and brightest turquoise water,it’s easy to see why so many respected travel organizations – including Condé Nast and Travel + Leisure – have called them the most beautiful beaches in the world. Throw in an ancient Mayan pyramid overlooking the sea,and it’s no surprise that real estate in Tulum is poised to explode after the new international airport is completed just outside of town.

While here, also consider heading inland to view the ancient Mayan ruins at Coba,or take a 90-minute trip inland to spend a day in Valladolid. This charming colonial city features seven beautifully preserved historic neighborhoods, which are known locally as barrios. Here, street vendors peddle ice pops and grilled corn on the cob with chile in the tranquil,tree-lined main square.
