2014 marks the third consecutive year that the Riviera Maya Film Festival has been held in locations throughout Cancun,Playa del Carmen,Tulum and Puerto Morelos. This year the festival will take place from March 9-15 and will feature more than 50 feature films from 23 countries worldwide.
Established in 2012,the festival has grown each year, attracting more than 21,000 cinema enthusiasts to the Riviera Maya in 2013. This year, the crowds are expected to be even larger,in part due to the impressive lineup of films that are on the schedule for the weeklong event. Since its inception, the project has enjoyed exponential growth and success, aiming to bring the world together through the artistic medium of cinema,as evidenced by the festival’s motto “El Cine Nos Une,” which translates to mean “Film Unites Us.”
Perhaps one of the Riviera Maya Film Festival’s most unique attributes is the simple fact that screening venues vary greatly, ranging from traditional movie theatres to several outdoor venues including right on the region’s fantastic beaches. In Playa del Carmen, screenings will be held at the Hollywood Cinemas in Plaza Pelicanos,as well as outdoors at the historic Parque Fundadores. In Tulum, films will be shown at the Explanada Municipal and on the beach at Papaya Playa. Finally,Cancun will host screenings at the Parque de las Palapas and the Cancun Drive In (Autocinema),while the El Unico Beach Club in Puerto Morelos and several other outdoor locations throughout the Riviera Maya will round out this year’s locations.
Originally created to expand the international and domestic film industry in Mexico, the Riviera Maya Film Festival also works to promote quality cinema worldwide and has positioned Cancun, the Riviera Maya and the entire Mexican Caribbean region as a worldwide cultural destination for cinema lovers. Several cash awards will be handed out via independent jury selection, including two Kukulkan Awards totaling more than $22,000 each,as well as the Kukulkan Youth Jury Award totaling around $7,500 and the RivieraLAB/Co-production Forum, which will award two projects more than $15,000 each. Finally, the RivieraLAB/Work in Progress endowment will provide more than $15,000 (each) for two separate projects.
