Mexico’s UNESCO Cultural Heritage Sites

21 January, 2014

Regardless of where you are planning to visit,Mexico real estate is full of ancient sites and boasts a rich cultural heritage that keeps travelers and resident ex-pats enthralled year after year. In fact,Mexico is home to a larger number of officially recognized UNESCO cultural heritage sites than any other nation in Latin America and is sixth worldwide.

The list of 31 cultural heritage sites found in Mexico today includes the pre-Hispanic city of Uxmal, which lies about 60 kilometers south of Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula, and has been recognized for 16 years by UNESCO for its historical significance. Here, visitors can view a variety of large, highly decorated structures, including the impressive,five-level Pyramid of the Magician and the enormous Governor’s Palace.

The large,pre-Columbian city of Chichen Itza is also on the UNESCO list and also lies on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, west of Cancun and east of Merida. The ruins here are significant architecturally and include a variety of different styles, some of which can also be seen in central Mexico. An estimated 1.2 million visitors tour Chichen Itza every year, making it the most popular archaeological sites in the world.

For adventurous travelers seeking to stray a bit further off the beaten path, the Mayan ruins of Calakmul offers the ideal opportunity. Located in Campeche state in southeastern Mexico, the enormity of this site makes it easy to see why it was chosen as a UNESCO cultural heritage site, with more than 6,750 ancient structures that have been identified. The largest is the great pyramid, which at 148 feet high is one of the tallest Maya pyramids that has ever been discovered.

Finally,on Mexico’s western coast on the Baja California Peninsula, the rock paintings of Sierra de San Francisco also made the prestigious list of UNESCO heritage sites in Mexico. These prehistoric rock art pictographs are found in the Sierra de San Francisco mountain range and span more than 250 locations.
