Playa del Carmen is developing an extensive new bike trail that covers various areas of town, including an improved section that goes right through the heart of downtown along 10th Avenue, which is just one street away from the beach. Other sections wind through Playacar,or connect to the Xplor eco-park,the highway bridge and the north end of town.
The downtown section of the bike trail is now much wider than it was previously and has two lanes that are completely separate from the sidewalk. The trail also features picturesque palm trees, decorative flowerbeds and connects to a trail that runs through Playacar, which is an upscale, gated community that lies at the southern end of downtown.
From Playacar, you can ride around the golf course and emerge back in downtown Playa del Carmen along a nicely shaded route,or you can hop on a new trail that connects to the Xplor eco-park and will eventually connect to the Xcaret eco-park as well. This bike trail is flat, straight and lined by the lush jungle, but it also gets a fair amount of sun throughout the day,so be sure to bring plenty of water for this trip, which is about three miles one-way to Xplor. You will likely see bright green iguanas and other jungle creatures along the way,so bring a camera!
Back in downtown Playa del Carmen real estate, the trail runs along several streets in the form of a new bike lane, including the main access road from the highway in the south section of downtown,Fifth Avenue and the beachfront plaza at the ferry dock. This includes a new bike trail that runs under the highway bridges, making good use of this otherwise dead space and leading to local sporting facilities as well as an outdoor workout area.
There are also new bike trails at the north end of town, providing access to the new Nick Price professional golf course, and the resort hotels that can be found in this area. Here, the trail runs along the newly designed Pintores Avenue, which ends at the entrance to the golf course where it connects with Fifth Avenue. In the near future, the bike trails will all connect, providing cycling enthusiasts and casual riders with a fun,laid-back way to explore the city.
