Mexico Real Estate News: Mexico’s Streamlined Visa Process

19 January, 2014

Going through the visa process in some countries can be a real nightmare, but Mexico has adopted a new electronic system that makes it easier than ever for expats to renew their residence visas. In fact,by simply filling out an online application and submitting the supporting documentation to the local immigration office, expats can literally obtain a renewed visa in as little as one hour!

Although it may be easier to renew an existing visa than it is to obtain a new one,Mexico is still one of the easiest places in the world for foreigners to obtain residency. For those who are considering obtaining residency in Mexico for the first time,or for expats who are getting ready to renew existing visas, the new system makes the process more efficient than ever. Here’s a brief overview of how it works:

For starters, since Mexico is working to move the residence visa application process into its local immigration offices throughout Mexico, you are no longer required to visit the Mexican consulate in your home country. Instead, once you have decided where you plan to live, simply visit the local immigration office. And since six-month tourist visas are easy to obtain, you have plenty of time to figure it all out.

Also, the application form is available online in Spanish at www.inm.gob.mx/. Although the website will translate some things into English,if you are not fluent in Spanish it may be helpful to obtain the services of a visa service or lawyer to obtain a new visa for the first time.

Mexico will keep your thumbprint on file to keep the renewal process simple and will issue a card similar to a driver’s license with a color ID photo. Although some local immigration offices will be faster than others,Mexico has also implemented a new visa tracking system that will help you keep tabs on the application as it is processed. The bottom line? Mexico real estate is interested in keeping it simple and has taken steps to simplify the process for expats to obtain and renew residence visas.
