A Journey Into Paradise

Mexico Real Estate and Farming in the Yucatan Peninsula

19 January, 2014

From growing peppers like habaneros to raising corn and soybeans or developing a hardwood forest, Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula has a wide variety of options for farmers. Although most expats opt to buy Mexico real estate for retirement or in order to have a vacation home, this tropical paradise has so much more to offer than just beaches and sun.

Sure, the balmy weather means dining al fresco is the norm throughout Mexico’s Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula, and there is plenty of sand and surf to go around, but this region is also a foodie’s dream come true. Here, the cuisine is full of tropical fruits, peppers and other fresh vegetables, often grown locally.

Of course, the culture of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – particularly the Riviera Maya – is also second to none. With a much slower pace of life than what you are most likely used to back home, living here seems somehow to be more dignified and definitely more peaceful. For example, the afternoon siesta is still a vital part of daily life for many of Mexico’s people.

Papayas are very popular here and locals consider the habanero pepper to be one of the most nutritious foods available. In fact, every market – both open air and indoor supermarket – throughout the Yucatan sells these spicy bright orange gems, which are believed to be a staple of good health.

Surprisingly, forestry is also a popular “crop” in the Yucatan. Farmers often plant hundreds of acres of trees, such as mahogany and melina, which is a Central American hardwood, to create a commercial forestry project. The best thing about farming in the region, however, is the easy access to beaches, music, theater, shopping, dining and countless outdoor activities that can be found here. This area is known for its modern, world-class amenities, which are mixed perfectly with a rich cultural history and stunning natural beauty.
