A Journey Into Paradise

Swimming with Sea Lions in Cabo San Lucas,Mexico

15 January, 2014

When you are swimming 30 feet or more below the surface of the Sea of Cortez,it’s likely that a variety of otherworldly apparitions will come into view, including giant groupers, turtles and whales, but the sea lion is perhaps one of the region’s most loved inhabitants.

Traveling in colonies of 12 or more, these feisty sea dwelling mammals like to surprise divers, zooming up close before swimming away with an uncanny quickness. The comical creatures are also commonly seen on land throughout the Baja California peninsula, napping in the sun or hobbling clumsily from one rocky outcropping to another. But it is underwater that their true grace and finesse becomes apparent; as ungainly as the sea lions may be on land,in the water they suddenly seem quite svelte and powerful.

The Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is an excellent place to dive and spot Mexico’s sea lions. This more than 27-square-mile protected ecosystem is home to more than 225 species of fish and a variety of endangered species,as well as the only living hard coral reef in the entire Sea of Cortez.

At less than an hour’s drive from downtown Cabo San Lucas real estate, this gem lies along the southeastern shore of the peninsula and was once a favorite destination of famed explorer Jacques Cousteau and novelist John Steinbeck, who published The Log from the Sea of Cortez in 1951,writing of the region:

“…Let us go,we said, into the Sea of Cortez, realizing that we become forever a part of it; that our rubber boots slogging through a flat of eel-grass,that the rocks we turn over in a tide pool, make us truly and permanently a factor in the ecology of the region.”

More recently,in the 1970s and 1980s overfishing did considerable damage to the region’s sea life, before establishing the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park in 1995. Since then, the fish population has grown by more than 463 percent, which is the largest increase ever recorded in a marine reserve.

Today, the region is full of exciting activities, including a wide variety of water sports, exciting nightlife, fabulous restaurants and traditional cultural destinations.
