Cabo San Lucas,Mexico,is known as the “marlin capital of the world” among international big game fishermen for good reason. This popular destination lies along Mexico’s scenic Pacific coastline and offers three days of “heart-stopping fishing action,” in addition to world-class accommodations, making it no surprise that Bob Bisbee chose this location to start the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament back in 1981.
Since then, the event has grown from a mere six teams and $10,000 in prize money,to more than 150 teams regularly participating each year, with millions of dollars up for grabs. In fact, the 2006 payout of $4,165,960 is still the largest payout in the history of sportfishing.
According to a press release,“the best time to go to Cabo to catch a billfish (marlin or sailfish) is during the winter months,” with catches actually peaking in December and January. In addition,2013 is shaping up to be a record year for the tournament, since fishing reports so far have already shown a remarkable increase in catches.
“On average, during the months of June,July,August and September,86.89 percent of fishermen leaving the port caught a marlin,” states the press release. “One well known fishing charter company logged 344 striped marlin caught in the first week of July, with a 500lb blue marlin lost at the boat and one lucky angler catching an amazing 16 marlin himself in one day.”
This year,Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament will take place October 22-26 and will be preceded by the smaller Los Cabos Offshore Tournament October 18-20. Both events will provide an added level of excitement for visitors,ex-pats and locals alike, with guests at the nearby hotels snagging an automatic a front-row seat to one of the world’s most exciting sporting events.
“With the beautiful and lively city of Cabo San Lucas as the backdrop, thousands of people crowd the marina walkways to shop, party and watch huge fish being weighed in at the scales in front of the world-famous Puerto Paraiso Entertainment Plaza,” states the Bisbee’s website. “The Black & Blue is a once in a lifetime experience you’ll never forget, whether you take home memories or millions.”
The cooler fall weather is what attracts the black and blue marlin to the warm waters of Cabo each year, making this the ideal time for the city to host a major sportfishing event. As a result, there are plenty of activities for visitors of all ages to enjoy, including family-friendly options and adults-only parties, which are held all over town for weeks surrounding the tournament.
