Sian Ka'an: Quintana Roo's Natural Treasure

27 August, 2013

If you are looking into Tulum Real Estate it’s important to mention the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.  In Mayan Sian Ka’an means “Origin of the Sky”.  The Sian Ka’an biosphere is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, just a few minutes south of the city of Tulum. In the Reserve there are mangroves, tropical forests, and marshes with a large marine section that connects to the barrier reef, along with a diverse fauna.

The Sian Ka’an was named by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) a World Heritage Natural Reserve back in 1987. There have been approximately 1200 plant species, which have been identified, and 550 terrestrial and 843 aquatic invertebrate species have been observed.  In addition, there are 23 Mayan sites in the reserve, while the Chunyaxché ruins, Vigia Del Lago and Xamach, are just moments to the north. Recently, a 24 km Mayan artificial canal was discovered in the reserve. The reserve is located in the least-developed part of Quintana Roo, and the population is predominantly of Mayan origin.  Source: UNESCO/CLT/WHC

There are some privately owned areas inside the Sian Ka’an but because it is a natural preserve the allowance for construction of homes is very limited and has to be done over a large area in order to preserve the integrity of the Sian Ka’an.  Due to the fact that access is limited and the supply of land for sale is low property inside the preserve is a very prestigious commodity.

If you have never visited the Sian Ka’an take time during your visit to the Riviera Maya to visit this beautiful reserve and discover what makes Sian Ka’an such a remarkable place.
