There are only a few occasions in a lifetime when one gets to experience love at first sight. It might be a person, an event, or a place. In my life, one of those precious moments took place when I visited Tulum. I remember the first time I visited this wonderful town. We arrived into Cancun with my husband a few days after hurricane Emily had passed through the area. I was pregnant with my first child and seeing that we had not visited this part of Mexico before, we could not decide if we wanted to brave the drive from Cancun to Tulum. At first, we changed our travel plans and opted to visit a different region. Something inside kept telling us that we should go to Tulum and check it out. We drove through a small jungle road (which is now a large freeway) and finally made it to town. That was the moment when our love affair with Tulum began.
You might be asking yourself “what is so special about Tulum?” Well here are just some of the reasons our family loves this place. First of all, the beaches in Tulum are second to none. Upon arrival you’ll know that you have discovered paradise. The ocean water changes into different shades of blue and the sand is powdery and so white you’ll want to wiggle your toes in it all day long. Tulum offers access to the second largest barrier reef in the world. One can choose to take one of the various excursions to either snorkel or dive (depending on experience) and connect with true underwater beauty. Please make sure not to touch any part of the reef. The reef it’s alive and will die if it’s touched by human hands. For those that like kite boarding Tulum is an ideal location because of the east/west wind direction which is optimal for the sport. Whether you choose to bask in the sun or have fun in the water this place offers something for everyone.
Tulum is the only city in the world you will find Mayan ruins which overlook the ocean. They are magnificent and breathtaking. Over 2 million people visit the ruins every year, just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. The center of town offers a wide array of restaurants to choose from depending on what you are craving. There is a large Italian population in Tulum real estate and because of this you can find world class Italian cuisine in numerous restaurants as well as Yucatecan cuisine. Every night you will be amazed at the variety and quality of the food offered in the different establishments for very reasonable prices.
Tulum’s atmosphere is laid back and relaxed, the complete opposite from “Vegas-like” Cancun. This is a place where you can truly unplug and let go of all stress. The town offers all the conveniences you expect from a large city but with the advantage of a small town feel. It does not matter if you have been to Tulum once or many times over the years. One always feels at home upon arrival into this magical place, after all I now live in the area with my family. I love to go to my own special beach spot where I can sip on a delicious frozen Tamarind Margarita and watch the sunset.
