Situated in the state of Sonora,Mexico, about two hours south of Arizona and four hours from California, the town of Rocky Point has become one of the region’s most popular destinations. Still known to locals as Puerto Peñasco, until the 1990s it was little more than a sleepy fishing village. Today, the area has been transformed by its close proximity to the U.S. and offers a wide variety of activities for all ages.
Throughout the beginning of 2013,including the the Semana Santa and Spring Break season, countless visitors have been relaxing and having fun on Rocky Point’s beaches, while others have come to enjoy the area’s other attractions. These include sporting events, such as the golf tournament held earlier this year at Sandy Beach, which marked the second annual CBSC tournament offered at Las Palomas Resort, while January’s Moonshine Tequila Classic Golf Tourney brought even more visitors to the area. In addition, the Major League Coaches Clinic & Golf Tournament at Laguna del Mar is one of the best this year.
If you are more interested in music,Arizona-based singer songwriter Roger Clyne visits Rocky Point at least twice each year. Sometimes he does a big concert like the “Circus Mexicus,” while other times he does a smaller show in local bars and clubs, such as JJ’s Cantina, where he is occasionally accompanied by The Hickman Dalton Gang.
In addition, crowds of baby boomers will invade the Beaches of Rocky Point for three days this September to attend Boomer Fest Days,a multi-dimensional show featuring music from the 1960’s,70’s and 80’s,with more than 24 mainstream international artists. A variety of other activities will also be available, such as a classic car show, fireworks display, golf tournament, deep sea fishing tournament, gourmet dinners, art and craft exhibitions, food and wine tasting and much, much more. The concert series will be held each day of the festival starting at 4 in the afternoon and lasting until 1 a.m. It is even rumored that a major artist will attend this year’s event!
Finally, the Mermaid’s Market is one tradition in Puerto Peñasco that is definitely here to stay. On the first and third Saturday of every month you can visit this arts and crafts market on the Plaza del Camaron, which translates to “Shrimp Square,” and spend a nice evening browsing through the many local and regional finds.
