Tulum has been making a name for itself as the new fashion capital of Mexico in recent years, and now Gap has developed a new clothing line inspired by the warm,sun-drenched hues of this growing hotspot on the Mexican Caribbean.
The new Cabana collection from the GapKids line has been introduced just in time for summer and includes a variety of embroidered rompers, denim vests, plaid shorts, graphic tees and striped dresses. It focuses on giving kids vibrant, comfortable fashion options in designs that draw on the rich culture and natural beauty of Mexico’s Riviera Maya.
Perhaps it’s really no surprise that the beauty and color of Tulum real estate has attracted enough attention to be given its very own fashion line. The area has already gained the attention of other members of the international fashion crowd,as reported in January of 2012 by the New York Times.
“Welcome to Tulum,a destination so popular with the fashion crowd that it almost feels like Fashion Week,” wrote Fashion & Style columnist Bob Morris. “While Teva-wearing backpackers look for sea turtles and New Age naïfs look for nirvana, the fashion-obsessed don’t have to look at all to find one another. They are everywhere, artfully dressed down in high-peasant style.”
From designers,to brand consultants and celebrity stylists, fashion’s in-crowd just can’t seem to get enough of Tulum.
“It’s like my Miami,” former Calvin Klein executive and current fashion brand consultant Kim Vernon told Morris. “But I didn’t go this Christmas because I just didn’t feel like seeing everyone I know.”
Movie stars have also gotten the memo about Tulum. The growing roster of celebrity visitors includes Evan Rachel Wood,Kate Bosworth,Ryan Phillippe,Neil Patrick Harris,Sienna Miller and Alexander Skarsgard,to name only a few.
Italian Vogue even called Tulum, “the new Goa,” and famed casting director Jym Benzing called it “the fashion jungle.” And with quick, easy flights from nearby Cancun to anywhere in the world, modern infrastructure and some of the world’s best beaches, you can bet the Riviera Maya has only just begun to work its magic on the jet set crowd.
