Some of the world's top windsurfers faced stiff competition in Cozumel,Mexico, recently in an attempt to secure a spot in the 2011 Pan-American Games, which will be held in October of 2011 in Guadalajara,Mexico. This international water sport event was the last qualifier for nations who have yet to qualify for the Pan-Am games. Cozumel hosted more than 50 windsurfers from North and South America,as well as delegates from Mexico, the Caribbean region,Puerto Rico,Uruguay,Peru,Venezuela,Netherlands Antilles,Guatemala,Cuba,Canada, and the United States.
The three-day event took place from February 17th through the 20th at Mike’s Beach Club,a scenic location amidst the beautiful Cozumel homes and condos. The competition was organized by the Mexican Windsurfing Association,in collaboration with the Mexican Sailing Federation. The title competition was also graced by the members of the International Windsurfing Association. The event hosted several windsurfing classes, including RS:X,Techno 293,Race board and Formula experience.
Talent versus experience was a common theme throughout the competitions leading up to the event in Cozumel real estate, as Olympic Games representative David Mier presented an exciting head-to-head challenge with 19-year old Mauricio Martinez. During the practice races leading up to the championship,Martinez gave a remarkable performance, projecting himself as a tough contender. Experience ultimately won over talent, however, and Mier emerged as the better performer with Martinez placing 22nd at Biscayne Bay,while Mier landed at the 12th place at the Rolex Miami OCR.
In addition,Dominique Vallee (CAN) and Demita de Vega (MEX) showed incredible talent in the women’s category. In the past,Vallee dominated the 2007 Pan-American Games and won the gold, but Vega conquered this year’s North American Championship, finishing at 13th place at the Rolex Miami OCR,leaving Vallee two places behind in the ranking.
This year’s event highlights the upcoming 2011 Pan-American Games, but it also brings attention to the final qualifying round for the 2011 RS:X Junior World Championship, which is growing in popularity.
