TripAdvisor has announced the world’s top destinations in the 2017 Travelers’ Choice Awards, and Playa del Carmen has snagged the coveted title of “Most Popular Destination in Mexico.” This year, downtown Playa del Carmen beat out other top tourist destinations in Mexico, including Cancun, Tulum, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, as well as Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast. According to a press release, the awards honor 418 remarkable destinations in 24 lists across the globe.
“Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period, as well as traveler booking interest on TripAdvisor,” wrote the popular travel planning and booking site when the results were released in late March.
Cabo San Lucas was named #2 on the 2017 list of the Most Popular Destinations in Mexico, followed by Puerto Vallarta at #3, Tulum at #4, Cozumel at #5, Cancun at #6, Mexico City at #7, San Miguel de Allende at #8, Huatulco at #9 and Oaxaca at #10.
Best Beaches in the World
There are several very good reasons downtown Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel and Cancun – which are all located along Mexico’s only Caribbean coast – all made this list. Perhaps first and foremost, the Riviera Maya – which stretches more than 80 miles south from Cancun along the Caribbean Sea on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – is widely recognized for having the best beaches in the world.
There are also plenty of unique cultural excursions, as well as world-class hotels, golf, restaurants, shopping, snorkeling and diving near downtown Playa del Carmen and throughout this part of Mexico, which is recognized for its safety, modern infrastructure and – most of all –for its breathtaking natural beauty.
“With inspired hikes through [ancient Mayan] ruins and irresistible snorkeling adventures, travelers have zero excuses for not having a good time,” wrote Forbes Travel Guide in a recent article about Playa. “Thanks to culinary styles that have equal dashes of tradition and trends, there’s zero chance of ever going hungry; and in detail-oriented resorts, there’s no reason why your autumn escape shouldn’t center around Playa del Carmen.”
Perhaps not surprisingly, six of TripAdvisor’s “Top 10 Beaches in Mexico” are also located in the state of Quintana Roo this year and all of them are easily visited from a home base in downtown Playa del Carmen. Isla Mujeres – which lies just offshore from Cancun – snagged the #1 spot on the 2017 list, followed by Playa Paraiso in Tulum at #2, Akumal Beach in Akumal at #3, Maya Chan Beach in Mahahual at #4, Playa Delfines in Cancun at #5, Balandra Beach in La Paz at #6, Nuevo Vallarta Beach in Nuevo Vallarta at #7, Playa del Amor in Cabo San Lucas at #8, Mayan Beach in Tulum at #9 and Xpu-ha Beach in Puerto Aventuras at #10.
When it comes to Mexico beach condos, nothing beats The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences, which offers the opportunity to enjoy ownership of amazing luxury in Playa del Carmen, with access to an amazing list of services and amenities. In addition, the development is only minutes from world-class theme parks, golf courses, nightlife, shopping and countless cultural attractions. Characterized by lush tropical gardens, crystal clear pools, contemporary style and warm hospitality, The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences is a glamorous place to escape the stresses of everyday life and with the now released building "Zenith 20" which will offer an adult-oriented vibe.
Tourism and Expats in Playa del Carmen
Of course, Mexico also happens to be one of the best countries for expats – just ask anyone who is living in Playa del Carmen either full or part time! With plenty of daily flights to catch at the nearby Cancun International Airport and some of the world’s best beachfront real estate, the state of Quintana Roo where Playa del Carmen is located has become home to a thriving, diverse and growing community that has helped make it one of the most popular destinations in Mexico.
“Since 2014, at least two thousand U.S. citizens have applied for permanent residence in Quintana Roo, joining the nearly 7,000 who were already legally living in the state,” wrote The Yucatan Times last month.
Of course, this number does not include expats who are only living in Playa del Carmen part time, or who own a vacation rental, condo or other real estate and simply come to vacation for a week or two every year.
