As we barrel toward Spring of 2019, tourism officials in Mexico have revealed that Cozumel, downtown Playa del Carmen and Tulum in the Riviera Maya region just south of Cancun all topped their own visitor records in 2018, and that more than 45 million international visitors are expected to visit the country this year.

“The predictions for 2019 indicate a 5.8% increase in international tourist arrivals and a 4.3% jump in spending” wrote TravelPulse. “In addition, 23,200 hotels and resorts will be in operation by the end of this year, bringing the total number of rooms offered to 834,000”.

Tulum – which lies just south of Playa and Puerto Aventuras on the Mexican Caribbean Sea – has also experienced a surge in visitors. Offering easy access to impressive archaeological sites and the best beaches in the world, Tulum is home to many of the region’s most exciting attractions. At least 300,000 visitors came to Tulum in 2018 – 50,000 more than the previous summer.

“Tulum is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Mexico and is especially popular with international visitors”, TravelPulse wrote.

Finally, Cozumel island – which lies just offshore from downtown Playa del Carmen and is easily accessible via ferry – had another banner year for tourism as well, shattering its own tourism records to report an unprecedented year in 2018, logging a 4% increase in visitors. In total, Cozumel hosted more than four million cruise ship passengers last year, accounting for more than half of the total number of passengers received throughout Mexico.

“Cozumel is internationally renowned for not only being a cruise and beach destination, but for being one of the top diving destinations in the world”, wrote TravelPulse.
