2018 Mexico Tourism Numbers Show ‘Exponential Growth’

As a country, Mexico welcomed a record-breaking 39.3 million tourists in 2017, marking a massive 78.7% increase among international visitors since 2012, and no region has felt this increase more than the Riviera Maya! In addition, this year the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) announced that Mexico is the world’s sixth most popular destination, a big leap from number 15 in 2012.

Mexico Tourism Defeats the Odds as Sales Remain Stable

2016 was a record breaking year for Mexican Tourism. In February the Mexico Tourism Board announced that 35 million international travelers had visited Mexico in 2016. TripAdvisor Names Playa del Carmen #1 in Mexico for Tourism

TripAdvisor has announced the world’s top destinations in the 2017 Travelers’ Choice Awards, and Playa del Carmen has snagged the coveted title of “Most Popular Destination in Mexico.” This year, downtown Playa del Carmen beat out other top tourist destinations in Mexico, including Cancun, Tulum, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, as well as Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast. According to a press release, the awards honor 418 remarkable destinations in 24 lists across the globe.

The announcement comes on the heels of rapid growth in Mexico’s tourism sector during the first half of the year, especially in places like Cancun and the Riviera Maya, which includes downtown Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum. Mexico’s rise is also being influenced by the situation in Turkey, according to Francisco Madrid, who serves as director of the School of Tourism at Anahuac University.
