Mexico’s Economy Growing Despite Trump Threats

Mexico’s economy appears to be on a roll in 2017, with a trade surplus in February and more economic growth that analysts had predicted in January, according to new data released last week by Bloomberg. At this point all signs point to Trump having little or no effect on economic growth in Mexico this year.

Bloomberg reported that Mexico’s new President,Enrique Peña Nieto, has taken office amid a number of encouraging promises including the added security and growth of the nation. In his first move since taking office Dec. 1, the president and Mexico’s leading political parties have already signed a pact to increase competition in the telecommunications industry and to improve the nation’s educational system.

Since winning the election earlier this year, Mexico’s president elect has been sending strong signals to the U.S., Spain and other countries, telling their leaders that Mexico will be ‘open for business’ under his administration. Enrique Peña Nieto will be taking office Dec. 1 of this year and has indicated his intention to open up Mexico’s government-owned concessions.

In late September Spanish banking group Banco Santander successfully completed the IPO of close to 25 percent of its Mexican Unit, Santander Mexico. The Banco Santander listed shares of Santander Mexico in both New York and Mexico City, effectively raising more than $4.3 billion on a day when the world markets were mostly down.

Earlier this week CNN reported that the U.S. vice president Joe Biden visited Mexico real estate to meet with current president Felipe Calderon and three of the top candidates running to replace him in elections that will be held later this year. The two-day visit focused on increasing cooperation between the two governments on issues that are important to both the United States and Mexico, including gun trafficking and drug violence along the border.
