Guadalajara lies around 300 kilometers inland from Puerto Vallarta and it is also Mexico’s second-largest metropolitan area, behind Mexico City, which lies about 540 kilometers southeast. As the birthplace of mariachis and tequila, Guadalajara has a strong sense of tradition, but Mexico’s second city also has a growing hipster vibe that is much different than the megalopolis of Mexico City or the northern industrial hub of Monterrey.

Heineken announced earlier this week that it plans to invest upwards of $480 million to build a new brewery in northern Mexico to meet growing demand in both the U.S. and Mexican markets. Located in the city of Meoqui in Chihuahua state, the plant is the Dutch brewing company’s seventh location in Mexico and is expected to have an initial production capacity of 132 million U.S. gallons of beer each year, but that number will eventually increase to at least double that amount.
