Mexico Plans to Bid For 2026 World Cup

06 March, 2016

Mexico Football Federation president Decio De Maria told the Associated Press late last week that he hopes to join the ranks of his predecessor Justino Compean by hosting the World Cup event in 2026. If successful, the bid would make Mexico the first nation to host the event three times.

“Mexico will follow up with the FIFA procedures to hold the tournament,” stated De Maria. “It means a big commitment, but most Mexicans will feel very proud to organize a third World Cup. As soon as the process begins with FIFA,Mexico will be present.”

Other nations have also demonstrated an interest in bidding to host the 2026 World Cup,including Canada,Columbia and the United States. Previously,Columbia was scheduled to host the World Cup event in 1986,but political unrest prompted officials to change the location to Mexico. Previously Mexico had also hosted the 1970 World Cup.

The United States has yet to make a formal announcement, but is also expected to make a bid after unsuccessfully trying to land the 2022 World Cup. That year went instead to Qatar – a decision that came just before news broke of a major FIFA corruption scandal.

In Mexico, recent and ongoing massive infrastructure investments will make the country a sharp contender for the event.

“Mexico’s 2026 bid will be bolstered by recent and upcoming investment in new stadiums,” wrote the Associated Press

Estadio Corona was opened by Santos Laguna in 2009,while Guadalajara reportedly built the new Estadio Omnilfe in 2010. In 2015,Monterrey built the Estadio BBVA,while the UANL Tigres, who were last year’s Copa Libertadores runner-up have announced plans to build a new stadium by 2018.

In addition, the city of Puebla’s Cuauhtemoc stadium just received a $40-million-dollar makeover in 2015,while Mexico City’s famed Azteca stadium is currently undergoing major adaptations in celebration of its 60th anniversary and because it will soon host NFL games.
