Forbes Names Cabo San Lucas #4 on World’s Top Destinations For 2016

14 February, 2016

Cabo San Lucas is one of the most beautiful beach towns in the world, offering visitors and residents alike access to a lifestyle that most of the world can only dream about. With gorgeous sun-kissed beaches,a lively nightlife scene, amazing cuisine and world-class activities,Cabo truly embodies luxury on Mexico’s Pacific Coast,so it’s little surprise that Forbes Travel Guide has named Cabo San Lucas #4 on it’s list of the world’s Top Destinations for 2016.

“Los Cabos is experiencing a boom with new hotels, refreshed resorts and even new golf courses,” wrote Forbes

As for where to saty in Cabo San Lucas, the new Forbes list recognized Las Ventanas al Paraíso,One & Only Palmilla,Esperanza,An Auberge Resort and The Cape,A Thompson Hotel, which is located just a few miles east of downtown and debuted in the summer of 2015.

“This stylish, modern Mexican resort has a pool built into a natural rock formation, two spa cabanas and the area’s only rooftop lounge,” Forbes revealed.

Hint: Keep an eye out for the new VieViage Los Cabos,a luxury boutique property currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2016. The concept was developed by Auberge Resorts and offers an intimate experience with guest suites and contemporary beachfront villas.

Up until the 1970s,the stunning 30-mile stretch of beach that is now home to Cabo San Lucas was a favorite hideaway for the world’s elite, including corporate bigwigs, oil magnates, movie stars and European aristocracy.

“The area was especially popular with Hollywood glitterati of the likes of John Wayne, bad boy Errol Flynn,Tyrone Power,Lana Turner, crooner Bing Crosby and their pals,” wrote the Huffington Post.

Whether they came to sail in their multi-million-dollar yachts, experience some of the world’s best deep-sea fishing, make backroom deals or experience a star-quality good time,Cabo aimed to please. Some sailed down from the Californian coast, while others opted to fly via private plane to stay in one of the area’s many secluded posadas, which all had their own dirt runways. Back then, little more than a dirt road connected the two main villages – Cabo San Lucas and nearby San Jose Del Cabo – which today are often referred to collectively as simply,Los Cabos,” which translates to mean “the Capes.”

“Fast-forward to today, and the region is one of Mexico’s most popular resort areas,” wrote the Huffington Post. “Replacing the old road between them,modern,four-lane highway flanked by hillside condos and some of Cabo’s swankiest hotel-resorts.”

The old dirt airstrips have also been replaced by the modern Los Cabos International Airport, but some visitors enjoy trekking down the Baja California Peninsula from the U.S. along the 1,000-mile trans-peninsular highway that begins just south of San Diego.

“World-class fishing is still a huge draw at Cabo, but rods and reels now share the stage with mashies and putters,” wrote the Huffington Post. “Credits for the [golf] courses read like a who’s who of championship designers, including Jack Nicklaus,Robert Trent Jones Jr.,Greg Norman,Tom Fazio,Pete Dye and Tiger Woods."

Today,Cabo San Lucas has a permanent population of more than 80,000 people, including an eclectic mix of locals and expats from around the world. The town is characterized by busy streets packed wall-to-wall with shops and restaurants of all types. Cantinas are easy to find,as are raucous nightclubs, but it’s the natural beauty of Cabo that remains the real star.

“Mexico’s Baja Peninsula ends a half-mile or so from the city at the iconic El Arco,a huge arch sculpted by the pounding waters of the Pacific on one side and the Sea of Cortes on the other,” wrote the Huffington Post
