Travel Channel Highlights The Hotspots of Tulum

17 January, 2016

If you haven’t been to Mexico’s Riviera Maya yet, you really are missing out. Not only has TripAdvisor placed Tulum at the top of its 2016 Traveler’s Choice list of “Destinations on the Rise,” which awards top vacation spots worldwide according to feedback provided by millions of TripAdvisor travelers. But in addition, the Travel Channel says Tulum is ideal for vacationers who want to experience Mexico’s untouched beauty, beyond the modern metropolis of Cancun.

Located on Mexico’s only Caribbean coast, just an hour and a half south of the Cancun International Airport, the town of Tulum is home to plenty of comfortable places to stay and a few luxury options, as well as restaurants to suit every budget. Still, Tulum remains beyond the grasp of developers who would commercialize its pristine beauty.

“With a rare mix of beach, archaeology and village, Tulum is a relaxation and romance destination with an ancient angle,” wrote TripAdvisor. “Travelers can sunbathe on Yucatan's Peninsula beaches within sight of the well-preserved Mayan ruins of Tulum.”

The Travel Channel recommends the exclusive, nine-room Mezzanine Hotel in Tulum, which offers freshly brewed coffee delivered to your room each morning, locally-made herbal toiletries, access to a plunge pool and free use of snorkel equipment. Another recommended option includes El Pez at Turtle Cove, which features thatch-roofed villas with hand-hewn furniture and private terraces, along with handcrafted cocktails.

“Mezzanine feels like a true respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” wrote the Travel Channel.

Or, you can opt to check out downtown Tulum’s stunning Hotel Casa Sofia, which is actually a stunning traditional Mexican Colonial-style home that has been turned into an expansive guest house, featuring a scenic swimming pool set in a cheerful inner courtyard, as well as color tile work and simple but comfortably decorated rooms.

“Diners can seek solace at Kitchen Tableknowing that the restaurant has made every effort to lessen its ecological impact,” wrote the Travel Channel.

The restaurant has used only natural and repurposed materials in its construction and derives its power from solar panels. We recommend the local lobster and salted caramel mousse, but everything on the menu is amazing.

Vegans (and those who just enjoy a great meatless meal every now and again) will enjoy dining at Raw Love, which the Travel Channel says has “mastered the art of creating delicious raw food.” Located on the beach at the Ahau Tulum hotel, the restaurant is known for its innovative healthy menu.

“Eating well – and healthy – is remarkably easy in Tulum, thanks to restaurants like funky little Co.ConAmor, which focuses on whole ingredients, vegetarian plates, and big flavors,” wrote Travel Channel. “Relax with a cup of organic coffee, and dig into fresh guacamole, or a salad of soba noodles, spinach and tomatoes.”

The Travel Channel also recommends checking out El Gran Cenote, which is one of the region’s most popular giant sinkholes for its crystal clear water, stalagmites and stalactites. The entire Riviera Maya region is sprinkled with more than 6,000 cenotes (pronounced seh-no-tay),which are popular places for swimming, snorkeling and cave diving. At El Gran, plan to arrive early and beat the late-day crowds.

Finally, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside of Tulum along the Yucatan Peninsula coast. Visitors can view more than 300 species of birds in more than 1.3 million acres of stunning tropical jungle, which includes forests, lagoons, mangroves, a palm savannah and wetlands along 74 miles of coastline.
