Irish Independent Names Cancun ‘Hottest Travel Ticket’ in 2016

03 January, 2016

Serving as the gateway to Mexico’s famed Riviera Maya region, Cancun is known for cultivating a family-friendly, party-friendly, laid-back luxury vibe that can only be found in this part of the Caribbean. Out of a list of the 20 Hottest Travel Tickets In 2016, the Irish Independent named Cancun the top choice, in part for its easy access and affordability.

“Long-haul package holidays rarely involve direct flights, so the recent news that Falcon and Thomson are to fly a Boeing 787 Dreamliner direct to Cancun this summer was greeted with huge enthusiasm.”

According to the report, the 9.5-hour flights will start running in June of 2016, with prices for a 14-night all-inclusive stay starting at € 1,709 pp at the four-star Club Hotel Riu Tequila in Cancun, just north of Playa del Carmen.

“Cancun is a great place to get away from the cold winter days and to get a little exercise exploring ruins, snorkeling and running on the beach,” wrote Gary Sorensen for The Spectrum. “In addition to the incredible beaches and wonderful weather, I love to see the Mayan Ruins.”

In downtown Cancun along the beach, the city offers countless hotels, tons of shopping, nightclubs, bars and restaurants. Just south of the Cancun International Airport, the Riviera Maya is home to a variety of other ultra-chic vacation options, including Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Regardless of where you decide to stay, there are countless hotels that are “all inclusive” which means that all of your food and drinks are included in a single package price. Many of the larger properties will have entertainment at night and will offer as many as six to ten restaurants on the property to choose from.

“There are three major ruin sites not too far away,”  Sorensen wrote. “The largest and most impressive is Chichen Itza, which is a two-to-three-hour drive from the hotel.”

Two other Mayan sites that are located closer to Cancun and Playa del Carmen include the seaside ruins and pyramid of Tulum, as well as Coba, which is located inland and has a pyramid you can still climb.

There are also a number of ecological parks located close to Cancun, including a few that will take visitors on a tour of local cenotes, which are gorgeous underground freshwater caverns that occur naturally throughout Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Cancun is also an ideal place for a family getaway, despite its enormous reputation as a party spot for spring breakers, which began during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Today, many of those students who came to Cancun and Mexico’s Riviera Maya to party are coming back with their families to enjoy the wide variety of activities that Cancun has to offer.
