Situated just 12 miles offshore from the ultra-chic town of Playa del Carmen in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, the island of Cozumel sits like a Caribbean jewel amidst the clear turquoise waters. Here, the world’s second largest barrier reef is teeming with life just waiting to be explored, making it one of the world’s best diving and snorkeling destinations.
Despite the region’s growing popularity, the local government has remained committed to maintaining the best levels of accessibility, innovation, sustainability and technology, prompting Spain’s Ministry of Tourism to name Cozumel Mexico’s very first “Smart Tourist Destination,” reported The Yucatan Times.
“Spain and Mexico have been working together by sharing each other’s strategies for tourism development; Mexico shared their ‘Pueblos Mágicos’ (Magic Towns) initiative, and Spain shared with Mexico the ‘Smart Destination’ project, in which the main idea is to focus the tourism industry development through technology and sustainability.”
Located just off the eastern shore of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel Island is just 359 square miles and is still mostly undeveloped, despite having every modern amenity and convenience imaginable in and around the capital city of San Miguel.
This December, officials from Spain and Cozumel put together a detailed report and action plan that will ensure Cozumel’s continued status as a “Smart Destination.” The plan provides a list of the necessary features, adaptations and other details that will help bring Cozumel into a new era of sustainable tourism development that caters to every whim of international visitors.
“Some of the necessary actions to be taken in the next few months are to improve the communications infrastructure, create a technical platform that can coordinate the proper interaction between the three levels of government along with the tourism service providers, and therefore establish new innovative business and operation models.”
Finally, according to The Yucatan Times, the main reason for transforming the island of Cozumel into Mexico’s first “Smart Destination” is to keep moving in a direction of innovation and sustainability, which will only work to increase its competitiveness among even broader worldwide markets.
