Quintana Roo Contributes 50 Percent Of Tourism Dollars In Mexico

Quintana Roo expects to close the year with an economic impact of tourism foreign exchange reaching between 17.3 and 17.5 million; a figure which officials from the state of Quintana Roo say is almost 50% higher than last year,greatly exceeding the figure for 2014.

"According to the information shown last month at the meeting of the Tourism Board of Mexico (CPTM),this year [2015] our contribution will be about 50% of the spills registered in the country," stated Laura Fernández Piña,who currently serves as Secretary of Tourism Quintana Roo.

Cancun and the Riviera Maya are the main tourist destinations in Mexico,attracting more tourists,and therefore higher income for the area. In January,the Federal Ministry of Tourism (Tourism Ministry) reported that 29.3 million visitors had arrived in the entire country of Mexico,amounting to an economic benefit if at least $16.2 million. Out of this figure,Quintana Roo contributed $8.2 million dollars, which accounted for a total 40% stake of the total.

Enrique de la Madrid Cordero,who serves as the current head of the Tourism Ministry,announced the first week of December that more than $17 million dollars will be brought in from tourism to the country. Also,based on sales projections for the tourism industry in the state of Quintana Roo,Fernández Piña said at year-end that 2014 figures and those planned for 2015 will exceed this number.

Excellent year in tourism

"From January to November,the economic benefit was more than $700 million dollars,in only Cancun and Puerto Morelos,which speaks of a great year in tourism," said Francisco Lopez Reyes,director of Tourism of Benito Juárez.

Cancun and Puerto Morelos currently offer of 36,699 rooms,and have consistently reported an 80% occupancy rate in the beach area,along with a 70% occupancy rate in the city.

The main markets for tourism to Cancun from the United States have a 47.1% share,followed by Mexico with 34.5%; Canada 6.5%,other highlights include Brazil,Colombia and the United Kingdom.
