As Mexico’s biggest island destination,Cozumel has its very own international airport, which makes it easy to get here from most of the world’s major cities. USA Today Travel recently explored what it takes to get married in Cozumel and we’ve put together the “must-know” info from their story, along with the inside scoop from the experts at Investment Properties Mexico.
“Mexico was just named the world’s most popular place for destination weddings, which means there are more couples now than ever before who are interested in locations like Cozumel, where it’s easy to have a tropical, beachfront wedding,” shared Richard Houghton of Investment Properties Mexico.
Although it is an island,Cozumel is located just offshore from Playa del Carmen in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, which means it has strong cultural ties to this famed region. Of course, visitors will also enjoy the legendary welcoming spirit of Mexico, mixed with a dash of Caribbean charm that is unique to this area of the country.
When planning a destination wedding in Mexico,be sure to start well in advance of the date you wish to wed. Couples can work online with a wedding coordinator through the resort of choice, and he or she can easily handle all of the details, including helping with the guest list and confirming reservations.
“Cozumel’s hotels range in price from expensive to budget,” writes USA Today. “If there are some attendees who are cash strapped,an alternative to missing the wedding altogether is booking a stay in one of the island’s more affordable hotels.”
Since the island is relatively small,it’s simple to get around via cab or bike,so guests will easily be able to reach the resort where the wedding is held, even if they opt to stay elsewhere. Of course, there are also plenty of activities to choose from on the island, including world-class scuba diving and snorkeling,a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and excellent duty free shopping in the port city of San Miguel. Be sure to reconfirm all details and reservations in the week leading up to the trip, and it’s always a good idea for the bride and groom to arrive a few days early to make sure everything is in order.
USA Today recommends the InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort Spa for couples who wish to enjoy a high-end resort for their destination wedding in Mexico,as this beachfront five-star property offers romantic details like in-room Jacuzzis with ocean views and outdoor showers. This is not an all-inclusive property,so amenities are pay as you go,but for those who can afford a stay, this luxury property is well worth the expense.
By contrast, the Secrets Aura Cozumel offers a fantastic adults-only option that is also all-inclusive. Suites here include fabulous touches, including solariums, private lap pools,Jacuzzi tubs and 27-inch flat screen TVs. This resort also employs a full-time wedding coordinator and offers a free night first anniversary stay for guests who plan to return.
Finally, for couples looking to get off the grid for their wedding and honeymoon,Ventanas al Mar is a fabulous eco-friendly boutique hotel that runs entirely on solar power. Newlyweds will enjoy the property’s duplex suites, which boast a spiral staircase leading to a private second floor balcony with dramatic ocean views.
