In recent years Mexico has worked
hard to establish itself as a Eco-friendly tourist destination, picking up an
impressive number of “green” awards in recognition of its efforts in supporting
sustainable tourism. This is no small feat and has already helped to further
bolster the country's already booming tourist industry, while also making a
positive impact on the environment.
A variety of accrediting bodies
have recognized Mexico in the recent months and years, including Green Globe,
Global Sustainable Tourism,Rainforest Alliance and Earth Check, among others.
It is typically quite difficult to obtain recognition and/or certification from
these types of organizations, which require a development or project to prove a
high level of environmental sensitivity in conjunction with a highly pronounced
respect for local communities.
In May of 2012 the Rainforest
Alliance publicly recognized the Mexican government's progressive forestry
programs for their numerous achievements,as well as the Riviera Maya's
world-renowned Mayakobá tourism complex for its impressive list of Eco-friendly
initiatives. Located just a few minutes north of Playa del Carmen
real estate, Mayakobá encompasses more than 1,500 acres of
jungle, white sand beaches, mangroves and pristine lagoons. In fact, the
underground water flow here was an important part of the resort's design, which
also opted to transplant trees and plants rather than destroying them during
the building process.
In addition,Green Globe
certification has been granted to developments from Huatulco in Oaxaca on the
Pacific Coast to the luxury Hacienda Tres Rios resort, spa and nature park,
which is situated on the Mexican Caribbean in the scenic Riviera Maya. The
Green Globe certification program strives to identify and recognize outstanding
tourist properties around the world that are dedicated to implementing
sustainable, green initiatives designed to protect the environment.
Many of Mexico's luxury beach resorts are now working hard to reduce
electricity and water consumption while carefully protecting area natural
resources and teaching visitors about the importance of sustainability when
traveling. In addition, the use of local, renewable resources, such as bamboo
for floors and organically-grown foods purchased from area farm co-ops help to
support the surrounding communities while also lessening the overall
Eco-footprint of the resorts.
