Mexico is #1 Destination for Spring Break Travel in 2014

02 April, 2014

The world’s top travel experts have once again recognized that destinations throughout Mexico are still the number one choice for spring break travelers worldwide. According to USA Today,The Huffington Post,Financial Times,ABC News,Yahoo! Finance and Fox News, travel to Mexico is already heating up this spring as record numbers of vacationers seek to escape the winter doldrums and enjoy some serious fun in the sun!

In Mexico, countless fabulous hotels and resorts compete for tourist dollars, which means spring breakers on a budget will get more value for their hard-earned money here than in other comparable beach destinations.

“That means great deals on some of the country’s most scenic areas, including towns along the Yucatan Peninsula, the Riviera Maya, and major destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Cancun,” writes The Huffington Post. “Great deals can be had for every type of vacation style,so don’t settle for merely a good price.”

In addition, although most visitors to Mexico are still coming from North America, the number of international travelers has increased dramatically in recent years. According to the Financial Times,“tourism is and will remain big business in Mexico” with the industry projected to become the nation’s third largest revenue stream by 2018,up from number five today.

Here is a rundown of what travel experts are saying you can look forward to when visiting some of Mexico’s most popular spring break destinations:

Located on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast and the gateway to the magical Riivera Maya region,Cancun snagged the #1 spot in USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice contest this year, which asked readers to name the world’s best spring break destinations. In addition,ABC News named Cancun as one of the 11 most affordable spring break vacation spots this year, while AAA Travel also recognized this popular spring break town as a top destination in 2014.

“Year after year, winning spring break destination Cancun lives up to its reputation as the ultimate Mexican spring break getaway, where March and April bring a nonstop party to the beaches and clubs,” writes USA Today.

Playa del Carmen

Perched along the pristine shores of the Mexican Caribbean Sea,Playa del Carmen – or simply Playa,as the locals often call it – is one of the go-to destinations among spring break travelers for 2014,according to Yahoo! Finance and recent Orbitz travel booking data. In addition, airfares to Playa and other destinations throughout Mexico have remained the same or are lower this year than 2013. Finally,ABC News named Playa on its list of this year’s 11 most affordable spring break vacation spots, while AAA Travel also recognized this popular resort town as a top destination in 2014.

Situated just south of Playa del Carmen and Cancun in Mexico’s fabled Riviera Maya region, the laid-back beach town of Tulum boasts a seaside Mayan pyramid and has become a mecca for yoga enthusiasts,eco-travelers and stylish expats who reside either full or part-time in this ultra chic destination. This year,The Huffington Post has named Tulum as the #1 choice for “Alternative Spring Break Destinations,” while AAA Travel also named this part of Mexico as a top spring break location for 2014.

“Tulum is surrounded by ancient Mayan ruins, magnificent stretches of coastline, and cenotes – sinkholes that create caves and underground rivers – which were used by the Maya for religious ceremonies,” writes The Huffington Post. “With an abounding wealth of ancient history and natural beauty, these historic lands will enrich your spirit and relax both body and mind.”

Cabo San Lucas

This swanky beachside resort town lies on Mexico’s Pacific Coast and is a well-established tourist hotspot for visitors of all ages. According to USA Today,“You’ll never have to leave the sand to find a good party,” but families with smaller children will also find plenty of opportunities to experience the region without having to deal with hordes of college kids. Cabo was also recently named one of the top 10 spring break destinations after four weeks of voting in USA Today’s 10Best Reader’s Choice contest.

In addition,The Huffington Post named Cabo San Lucas one of the “Top 10 March Travel Hotspots,” with its more subdued spring break scene and a variety of celebrations taking place all month long. For example,Carnaval festivities are in full swing leading up to Ash Wednesday, followed by an 11-day Fiesta de San Jose del Cabo, which honors the town’s patron saint through live music, dancing and traditional cuisine.

Puerto Vallarta

Also on Mexico’s Pacific Coast but farther south than Cabo, the city of Puerto Vallarta has earned its very own place on The Huffington Post’s 2014 list of the “Top 10 March Travel Hotspots,” with its warm, dry climate and the added chance to witness the final stages of the annual humpback whale migration.

“This part of Mexico is investing in new resorts and attracting visitors of all ages and for a range of activities,” writes the Huffington Post. "Puerto Vallarta is a prime example of a resort area that has something for everyone, with high end resorts offering a calm retreat,to family-friendly options,to places where fun can be found – even on a student’s budget.”

Fox News also chose Puerto Vallarta as the #1 choice for spring break getaways, naming the city’s fabulous climate, gorgeous beaches and affordable prices. In addition, plenty of low-cost airfare routes to Mexico have been added recently, leading to many hotels dropping prices, while the region’s iconic natural landmarks, shops, art galleries and world-class cuisine of Puerto Vallarta will keep even the most seasoned travelers entertained. Finally,ABC News also named Puerto Vallarta #2 on its recent list of this year’s 11 most affordable spring break vacation spots.
