Condé Nast Traveler Names Top Yoga Retreats in Tulum, Mexico

03 February, 2014

Located along Mexico’s Riviera Maya coast, just south of Playa del Carmen and Cancun, the up and coming town of Tulum is known for its chic bohemian vibe and focus on sustainability, not to mention its breathtaking Mayan ruins, which include a seaside pyramid. In a recent travel blog, Condé Nast Traveler named two of Tulum’s yoga retreats on its ten-best list of the “World’s Top Yoga Retreats.”

“We asked a handful of our favorite yoga pros where they travel to get their Om on,” writes CNT. “No matter where you choose, book any of these yoga retreats and you’ll come back feeling zen, tan, and uh, bendy.”

Yogaworks, Amansala

The Yogaworks Retreat at the Amansala resort in Tulum snagged the number one spot according to Condé Nast. Offered several times each year and nominated by Jennifer Aniston’s yoga teacher Mandy Ingber, the retreat begins each day with a session of Vinyasa yoga, followed by a variety of workshops on breathing, meditation and sequences focused on relaxation. Of course, there is also plenty of time to explore the surrounding area, including the fabulous beaches, ruins and nearby town proper.

Amansala is a boutique hotel and resort that is committed to eco-conscious practices and personal wellness, including organic design, fresh cuisine and natural spa treatments. Here, 24 stunning cabanas are positioned along the beach, near a restaurant, terrace, yoga shalas and massage rooms. The resort also offers a five-day detox program, as well as an acclaimed Bikini Bootcamp fitness holiday experience.

Daily Yoga Classes, Ahau Tulum

Coming in at number five on the list, the daily yoga classes at eco-chic luxury hotel Ahau Tulum were nominated by Latham Thomas, who hosts “Om on the Go” for Scipps. Here, in addition to daily yoga classes, guests can sign up for a retreat or request private lessons in-suite.

“It’s a magical place, which feels like it’s at the end of the world but it’s only a three-hour flight from New York,” Latham told CNT. “The ocean breeze cools you as you sweat it out on the mat.”

Located on the beach not far from downtown Tulum, the Ahau hotel is an environmentally conscious facility that recycles, composts and uses renewable energy to generate electricity. The restaurant serves a variety of fresh local ingredients, including fresh squeezed juices, and a variety of cabanas are available for your stay.
