Cabo San Lucas is one of the world’s premier vacation destinations, attracting Hollywood A-Listers and vacationers from around the world seeking to enjoy the area’s famous sun, sand and surf. And with plenty of affordable,non-stop flights from destinations throughout the U.S.,Canada and beyond,it is no surprise this safe,ultra-chic city is gaining even more attention on the world stage.
“Initially a collection of fishing villages and a few resorts, the area burgeons with palatial homes dotting the shores with picturesque taquerias (taco stands) and local families pulling in the daily catch,” writes traveler David Eisenstadt for the Canadian Jewish News. “Tranquil town squares with historic architecture share space with designer nightclubs. Celebrity sightings happen.”
Situated in the state of Baja California Sur on Mexico’s Pacific shore, about 1,600 kilometers from the U.S. border, there are actually three distinct areas that belong to what is collectively referred to as “Los Cabos.” First, there is Cabo San Lucas, which lies on the Sea of Cortez, then there is an area known as “The Corridor” followed by San Jose del Cabo to the east, which is a more traditional town that was founded by the Jesuits in the 1700s.
The Corridor is actually a new modern highway that runs between the two towns. Once a small fishing village,Cabo San Lucas today is bustling with shops,an upscale marina and plenty of dining. Here, visitors and locals alike can peruse colorful embroidered Oaxacan textiles, handmade pottery, fine art galleries and much more. In addition,Cabo is home the famous El Arco landmark, which is a natural arch and stunning rock formation that is only accessible by boat and is typically included on the agenda when you sign up for one of the city’s whale watching tours. Nearby,Lover’s Beach provides an excellent place to stop and enjoy the golden sand and warm water.
Golf is another of Cabo’s main claims to fame and there are several fabulous places to play in the area, including the impressive course at Cabo San Lucas Country Club, which was designed by Pete Dye and also features nine lakes and a magnificent desert landscape. In addition, the Cabo Real Golf Resort is situated along the coastal corridor and was designed and built by Robert Trent Jones,Jr. This challenging course works its way up into the mountains before winding back down again to the Sea of Cortez. Finally,Tiger Woods has designed a course at the Diamante resort in Cabo, which will open by mid-2014.
Regardless of what it would take to create your ultimate beach vacation,Cabo San Lucas has everything – and more – that any traveler could wish for. Fishing, water sports, fine dining, shopping, exciting nightlife, golf, natural wonders and colorful cultural experiences are always at your fingertips, beckoning visitors to return again and again.
